PURPOSIVE

QUOTA SAMPLING
INTRODUCTION
Sampling is a fundamental to all
statistical methodology of behavioural
and social research.
No amount of subsequent statistical
findings will improve its quality.
Sampling is the part of the strategy of
research.
PURPOSIVE SAMPLING

A purposive sampling is selected by

some arbitrary method.
Purposive sampling :

When a typical sample is to be selected
from the appropriate sample the
purposive sampling is used.
The process of purposive sampling :

Typical

It is such a sampling method in which

elements are chosen based on purpose of
study.
Study of

group
ADVANTAGES OF PURPOSIVE
SAMPLING
It uses the best available knowledge.
concerning the sample subjects.
Better control of significant variables.
Sample group data can be easily
matched.
Homogeneity of subjects used in the
sample.
Judgmental samples do not involve any
random selection process.
DISADVANTAGES OF PURPOSIVE
SAMPLING
Reliability of the criterion is questionable.
Knowledge of population is essential.
Not free from error.
Unable to make generalization concerning
total population.
Technique is objective..
Uncontrolled variation.
QUOTA SAMPLING

Quota sampling is a frequently used

type of non-probability sampling.
Quota sampling is defined as obtaining
a desired number of elements by
selecting those most accessible to the
researcher and those that possess
certain characteristics of interest to
him.
In it population is classified into several
categories.
ADVANTAGES OF QUOTA SAMPLING

Easily administered.

Allows the researcher to easily compare groups.

Useful when detailed accuracy is not important.

Improvement over the judgment sampling.

Frequently used in social surveys.

Economical than most other probability or non-

probability sampling method.

DISADVANTAGES OF QUOTA SAMPLING

It is not a representative sample.

Not free from error.
It has the influence of regional geographical
and social factors.
Opportunity for interviewers to select the most
accessible elements.
Selection is not random.
CONCLUSION

Purposive and Quota sampling are

similar to identify participants based
on selected criteria. However ,quota
sampling is more specific with respect
to sizes and sub- samples, with
subgroups chosen to reflect
corresponding proportions in the
population.
