RESEARCH FOCUS

This research focus on the effects of seating

arrangements as a classroom design implemented
on STEM students.
TOPIC JUSTIFICATION
1. To determine if there is a correlation between seating
location and student performance
2. To help teachers who have students who are struggling
3. To have improved learning potential
SHORT REVIEW OF
LITERATURE
Classroom Management
The concept of Classroom Management are often called classroom
discipline. For nearly 43 years classroom discipline has been a priority for
teachers, for as long as there have been surveys of educational priorities
(Kratochwill, 2014). One study by Wong (2009) described that classroom
management refers to the whole thing that a teacher does to arrange
students, space, time, and materials so that learning can take place. This
management involves encouraging student involvement and cooperation
in all classroom activities and initiating a fruitful working environment.
Another work by Burden (2004) said that classroom management requires
teacher actions to create a learning environment that advices positive
social interaction, active commitment in learning, and self-motivation.
SHORT REVIEW OF
LITERATURE (CONT.)
Managing the classroom effectively is one of the most important job of the
classroom teacher. School policies regarding curriculum, assessment,
staff relativity, and community involvement have twice impact (Marzano,
2003)
Through classroom management systems, student success increase by
building an orderly learning environment that enhances students
academic skills, competencies and their social and emotional
development. This management is most effective when attached to three
basic principles (Brophy, 2006, pp. 39-40): (1) emphasize student
expectations for behaviour and learning (2) Promote active learning and
student involvement (3) Identify important student behaviours for
success.
SHORT REVIEW OF
LITERATURE (CONT.)
Based on the 2006 survey of pre-K through grade 12 teachers
conducted by APA, teachers report lack in implementing
classroom management strategies resulting to issue for
teachers such as the stress it contribute. It means it is
important to use effective classroom management
strategies. So, if the teacher could handle and manage their
classroom well, the classroom atmosphere will become
helpful and teaching learning process will go well.

Seating Arrangement
One study by Wrigt (2005) stated that the classroom climate
and discourse can be adjusted significantly when seating
arrangements are changed, it means that seating
arrangement are important concern.
According to Brown (2007) in Lotfy (2012) Students seat could
be arranged in regular rows and columns, circles, or U-
shapes. McCorskey and McVetta (1978) divide seating
arrangement in three most common types: traditional,
horseshoe and modular.

Previous Research
In this research, the researcher uses some previous researches to guide the research. The
first researcher is Angela Jean Hammang (2012) who conducted a research entitled
The Effect of Seating Achievement in The Biology Classroom. This research
investigated the relationship between classroom seating arrangements, student
motivation and achievement in the science classroom. The second researcher is
Nohayer Lotfy (2012) who conducted a research entitled Seating Arrangement and
Cooperative Learning Activities: Students On-task/Off-task Participation in EFL
Classrooms. He examines the classroom seating arrangements contribution to student
on-task/off-task participation while working on cooperative learning activities. The third
researcher is Nurmala (2014) who conducted a research entitled The Effect of U-Shape
(Horseshoe) Seating Arrangement on Speaking Ability of the Tenth Grade Students at
SMK TI Airlangga Samarinda. This research observe the classroom seating
arrangement to find out which one is better to use in teaching and learning speaking.
SHORT REVIEW OF
LITERATURE (CONT.)
Similarity to this previous researches were the subject is classroom
seating arrangement where the studies goal were to find out the effect
of classroom seating arrangement. The researcher of this researcher
also uses the same variable like three previous researches which is
classroom seating arrangement. The first research analyzed seating
arrangement in rows model and the second research used rows and
circle models, the third one used U-shape models. This research is
going to use Theatre models. The first research arranged the seat in
rows and the researcher analyzed the relation of seating arrangement
to students achievement in the classroom. At the second research the
researcher arranged the seats in two models of seating
arrangements
SHORT REVIEW OF
LITERATURE (CONT.)
.because the researcher wanted to find out which seating arrangement
was suit on-task and which suit off-task. The third research used row
and u-shape seating arrangement to find out which one is better to use
in teaching and learning speaking. This research, is going to use the
seating arrangement implemented by the teachers to find out the
effects. The difference within this researches is the objective and focus
of the research. In the first research the focus is in the seating
arrangement and students achievement. In the second research the
focus is seating arrangement and students on-task and off-task, the
third research focus is seating arrangement and students speaking
ability, and this research focuses on seating arrangement and STEM
performance in Basic Calculus.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. Does a person sitting in the front row of a
classroom do better than person sitting in the
rear of the classroom?
2. What factors are influencing that person?
3. Does sitting in the front row makes that person
more motivated?
SIGNIFINCANCE OF THE
PROPOSED RESEARCH
1.) This study aims to improve the learning efficiency of the STEM
students toward their learning capacity.
2.) This study will benefit the STEM educators to effectively
improve teaching strategies as to ensure learning process of the
students.
3.) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics will
enhance and maximize the students ability through the use of this
research.
4.) This study aims to develop and enhance the math ability of
STEM students in the specialized class.
5.) School strategies will be more sufficient for the STEM
students. This study will improve the quality of education within
the school.
