 !! "#, or spin-based electronics,
refers to the study of the role played by
electron spin in solid state physics, and
possible devices that specifically exploit
spin properties instead of or in addition to
charge degrees of freedom.

=. Electrons have an intrinsic quantity of
angular momentum called spin.
2. A vector represents the electron spin. For a
sphere spinning ³west to east´ the vector
points ³north´ or ³up´. It points down for the
opposite spin.
3. Spintronics devices create spin polarized
currents and use the spin to control current
flow.

Monsider a small electrically charged sphere
that is spinning rapidly. The circulating charges
on the sphere amount to tiny loops of currents
surrounding the sphere.
'( To see how polarized currents would flow
through DNA molecules,
Zwolak and Di Ventra considered two spin
valves ± one with iron electrodes and one with
nickel electrodes ± in which DNA was the
conductor. They calculated the current that
would flow through the DNA molecules when the
electrodes in each spin valve were magnetized
first in the same direction ± or µparallel¶ ± and
then in opposite directions ± or µanti-parallel¶.

£ All Spintronics devices act according to the
simple scheme: (= Writing, (2 the spins, being
attached to mobile electrons, and (3 eading.
£ Murrent efforts in designing and
manufacturing Spintronics devices involve two
different approaches. The first is perfecting the
existing GM-based technology by either
developing new materials with larger spin
polarization of electrons or making
improvements or variations in the existing
devices that allow for better spin filtering. The
second effort, which is more radical, focuses on
finding novel ways of both generation and
utilization of spin-polarized currents.
