opposed many of the New Deal programs.

Talmadge served as Georgias governor from

1933-1937 and from 1941-1943.

He appealed to Georgias rural farmers and they

backed him passionately.

Talmadge opposed civil rights for African

Americans and fought against integration of
schools.
Talmadge believed that the federal government
should stay out of state matters and he refused
to back many of Roosevelts policies.
