LESSON 3

PAGE-29
3:1 AIR-ATMOSPHERE
Introduction to atmosphere & Air
Air is a mixture of several of gases.
The diagram for this was on page 30.
3.2 IMPORTANCE OF AIR.
All living beings need air.
Process of respiration.
Oxygen and Carbon-di-oxide takes part in

respiration.
3.3 AIR AS A MIXTURE.
Major constituents of air are oxygen and
nitrogen.
Smaller amounts of Nitrogen & Oxygen.

These points could have been included

in 3:1
PAGE 29 ANALYSIS:

Use of register?
The language used is simple .

Is the title related to the content?

Content is comprehensive & related.

Coherence of the content?

Not much coherence.
Diagrams for the particular content could

have been given beside or below them.

The diagrams were not colourful.

A simple diagram for respiration process

could have been included.

A colourful diagram for the mixture of gases

could have been given instead of the plain
tabular column.

SEPERATION OF CARBON-DI-OXIDE.

FIG 3.3
3.4 SEPERATION OF NITROGEN
AND OXYGEN THROUGH
FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION.
AIR IS LIQUIFIED.

THE LIQUIFIED AIR IS SUBJECTED TO

FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION.
PAGE 30 ANALYSIS:

Use of register?
Quite simple
Is the content related to the sub-title?
Yes.
Is the content coherent?
Yes
Use of technical terms?
Yes. The technical terms have been used

but certain terms like:-

The process of liquifying of the air is not
explained.
Diagram for the fractional distillation

process is not given & nor has it been

explained.

AIR POLLUTION
Contamination of air with
unwanted and harmful gases
and smoke is called air
pollution.
CAUSES OF AIR
POLLUTION
Burning of fossil fuels
Like coal, petrol, diesel etc.
Automobiles- exhaust
Industrial exhaust
Smoking
HARMFUL EFFECTS OF AIR
POLLUTION

Polluted air is unsafe to breathe.

Polluted air depletes ozone layer.
It contains excess of CO2 causing global
warming.
It causes a number of diseases like lung
cancer, bronchitis, and allergies.
PREVENTION OF AIR
POLLUTON
We can reduce the usage of fossil fuels like coal,
petroleum.
Growing more trees helps in reduction of
pollution.
Tall chimneys should be installed in industries.
Avoid smoking
Burning of plastics should be avoided.
PAGE 32 ANALYSIS:

Use of register?
context is relevant & age appropriate but
had a few spelling mistakes here and there.
Is the content related to the sub-title?

Yes, definitely.
Is the content coherent?

Yes it is.
Use of technical terms?

Yes, technical terms have been used :

as, when & where required.
PAGE-33
TREATMENT OF SMOKE
(AEROSOL) IN
INDUSTRIES
Industrial exhaust contain
aerosols like smoke. This
smoke is passed through an
electrostatic precipitator. It
contains two electrodes. High
electric potential is applied
between the electrodes,
ELECTROSTATIC
PRECIPITATOR charged particles get
precipitated on the electrodes.
PAGE-34

GREEN HOUSE EFFECT

GREEN HOUSE EFFECT-
Burning of fossil fuels, deforestation is a reason
for the increase of level of carbondioxide in the
atmosphere. Carbondioxide absorbs infrared
radiations reflected from the surface of earth and
heats up the atmosphere. This heating up of
atmosphere by CO2 in the air is called green
house effect.
Beacause of green house effect the
average temperature of the earth increases and
this is known as global warming.
ACID RAIN
ACID RAIN-
The pollutants like oxides of sulphur and
nitrogen readily dissolves in rain water
and produce acids. This is called acid
rain.
Acid rain can corrode
buildings constructed with marble and
stones. It also corrodes metals. Acid rain
destroys plants and kills aquatic life.

Is the content related to the sub-title?

Yes, but could have a vivid discription.

Is the content coherent?

Yes, vividity more coherent.

Yes, content related.
