IC Engine Testing

Purpose / Aim of IC
Engine testing
To obtain info which is not
possible/available to determine by
calculations.
To Cfm validity of data used in the
design
To satisfy user / customers as to the
rated power with guaranteed fuel
consumption.
Type of Tests
Commercial Tests
Thermodynamics Tests
Commercial Tests
These tests are conducted for following purposes
:-
To determine rated power output w.r.t fuel
consumption in Kg/BHP hr
To find out quality of Lub oil required/BHP-hr
[Qty (oil) / BHP hr]
To check Steadiness of Engine under different
loads.
To determine over load carrying capacity of
Engine
To check and cfm valve Timings.
Commercial Tests
Rated Power
Speed at which we get Max HP as stated
by MFR.
Operation beyond the rated speed, causes
Disappropriate Engine wear & Excessive
Fuel Consumption.
Gross HP
Gross Horse Power of an Engine is amount
of HP Engine can deliver w/o any
accessories and Muffler assy
Net HP
It is HP left to propel the vehicle
after the requirement of all the
accessories have been deducted
from Gross HP
Thermodynamics Test
1. Aim is to Compare actual performance
with ideal / theoretical performance .
2. Following Tests measurements are taken
to calculate Thermal Efficiency and draw
