MODULE 7.10 : SPRINGS

7.10 SPRINGS (DCAM REF: 7.10, LEVEL 2)

Purposes of a Spring

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson the student will be able to:-

1. Identify the types of springs in use
2. Identify the main purposes of springs.

7.10 SPRINGS (DCAM REF: 7.10, LEVEL 2)

TYPES OF SPRINGS
Springs are classified according their
properties.

Depending on load they may be classified as:

Tension/Extension spring axial load
Compression spring axial load
Torsional spring torsional force

7.10 SPRINGS (DCAM REF: 7.10, LEVEL 2)

PURPOSES OF SPRINGS
1. To store energy for part of a functioning cycle.
2. To force a components to bear against, to maintain contact with, to
engage, to disengage or to remain clear of some other component.
3. To counterbalance a weight or thrust (gravitational, hydraulic, etc.).
4. To maintain electrical continuity.
5. To return a component to its original position after
displacement.
6. To reduce shock or impact by gradually checking the motion
of a moving weight.
7. To permit some freedom of movement between aligned
components without disengaging them.

Inspection and Testing of Springs

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson the student will be able to:

1. Understand and carry out inspection of springs used.

2. Understand testing of springs.

MAINTENANCE INSPECTION OF SPRINGS

Springs are checked for serviceability - rectified by replacement.

Checks include:
An inspection for corrosion, damage, wear, broken coils and
distortion.
Method: Visual Inspection

Using a steel square, measure the deviation of the inner compression spring.

MAINTENANCE INSPECTION OF SPRINGS

Checking for correct FREE LENGTH of coil springs.
Compression springs can be checked using a vernier calliper or
surface table and high gauge.
Tension spring laying flat on a surface table using a vernier
caliper.
Limits as laid down in manufacture maintenance manual

Using a vernier caliper, measure the

free length of the compression spring.

If the free length is not as specified,

replace the spring

Check for "springiness".

Using masses and checking the extension/change in length
with each added mass.
Return to its free length condition when unloaded.
The smaller the Springiness value is, the stiffer the spring and the faster the
elasticity decreases in intensity over each oscillation.

Testing of Springs
Periodically, springs are tested to ensure that they can perform to their
designed roles.

Typical tests involve the following: -

1. Prior to testing, a comparison of the dimensions of a used spring and
new one will often reveal its condition and state.
2. Hardness tests will be carried out to check the hardness of the
springs material.
3. Tensional and compressional load tests will then be carried out and
the springs static length will be checked after the tests. The data
obtained is then compared to the manufacturers specifications and
dimensions to determine the service ability of the spring.
