Turret Lathes

Introduction
Introduction
Used in batch production to machine workpieces of complex
shape from bar stock or separate blanks.
Best used where the machining of a
workpiece requires consecutive
operation of various cutting tools (such
as single-point tools, drills, reamers,
taps, boring tools, etc.
The tools are fitted in the necessary
sequence on the turret and tool posts of
the cross slides.
All the cutting tools are installed
beforehand, and are brought into action
one by one or simultaneously during
the machining.

Advantages of Turret Lathes over Engine Lathes
Use of multiple tool holder
Simultaneous machining of w/p with tools both of cross slide
and the turret help to reduce machining time.
The presetting of the machine for working with several tools
helps to reduce non-cutting time.
Mass and batch production
Types of Turret Lathe
Depending upon turret layout:
Vertical axis of turret rotation
Horizontal axis of turret rotation
Types of Turret Lathe
Bar type and Chucking type
Bar Type: These types of machines are fitted with collet
chuck and are suitable for producing jobs from bar stock.
These are mainly used for mass production of identical
parts from bar stock.
Chucking Type: These machines are equipped with three
or four jaw chuck and have a varied application. These are
capable of machining jobs of different shapes and sizes,
including the bar stock. The main application of these
machines is machining of individual items like castings and
forgings.
Types of Turret Lathe
The two main types of horizontal lathes
The Capstan or Ram Type Lathe
The Turret or Saddle Type Lathe
The Capstan or Ram Type Lathe
The ram type turret lathe or capstan lathe carries the
hexagonal turret on ram or a short slide.
The ram slides longitudinally on a saddle positioned and
clamped on lathe bed ways.
This type of machine is lighter in construction and is suitable
for machining bar of smaller diameter.
The tools are mounted on the square turret and six faces of the
hexagonal turret.
The feeding movement is obtained when the ram moves from
left to the right.
When the ram is moved backward the turret indexes
automatically and the tools mounted on the next face comes
into operation.
The Turret or Saddle Type Lathe
The hexagonal turret is mounted directly on a saddle and the
whole unit moves back and forth on the bed ways to apply
feed.
This type of turret lathe is heavier in construction and is
particularly adapted for larger diameter bar work and
chucking work.
The machine can accommodate longer work pieces than that
in a capstan lathe.
Main Dimensions
For bar type turret:
Bar capacity
Diameter of the spindle
For chucking type turret:
Maximum diameter of workpiece accommodated over the
bed and over the cross slide carriage
Maximum distance between the spindle nose and the turret
face
Maximum travel of the turret
Collet Chucks
The collet chuck is the most accurate chuck and is used for
high-precision work.
Types:
Pull-in/ draw-in
Push-out
