INTRODUCTION

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (U.P.S.) is an electrical

apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the
input power source fails.
PARTS OF U.P.S.

U.P.S. system contains the following parts :-

Charger Card

Inverter Card

E.M.I. Filter

Stabilizer
CHARGER CARD
It consists of a rectifier which converts AC in to DC to charge
the Battery.
Input AC Main Output DC
Supply

RECTIFIRE BATTERY
INVERTER CARD

It converts the DC into AC.

TYPES OF U.P.S.
ON-line U.P.S.
In ON-Line UPS INVERTER Card is always active.
Static Switches S2 :- Always ON
S1 :- Generally OFF.
When inverter fails: S1:- ON.
There is zero switchover time.
OFF-Line U.P.S.
Input is directly connected to Output.
Switches S1: Normally ON
S2: OFF
When mains fails: S2: ON
There is switch over time of 2 to 4 m sec.

RESISTOR

Resistors are measured in ohms ().

Typical values range from 10 to 10 M.

Value is coded on the body using a color code.

Above, green-blue-red = 5.6 k.

Schematic symbol:
DIODE
A Diode is made from a combination of 2 extrinsic
semiconductors, P-type ad N-type material.
The joint between the P-type and N-type material is
called PN junction.
V-I CHARACTERISTIC CURVE
ZENER DIODE
A Zener Diode allows current to flow from its anode to its
cathode like a normal diode, but it also permits current to flow
in reverse direction.
It works as a voltage regulator.
CAPACITOR

Capacitors are measured in farads (F).

Typical values range from 10 pF to 1000 F.

Value may be printed directly on the body (as above) or using a

numeric code.
Schematic symbol:
TRANSFORMER

A Transformer is a static device.

A Transformer work one the Faradays principal of mutual
induction.
VARIABLE RESISTOR

A variable resistor allows more control over current flow by

changing the amount of resistance.
Variable resistor is used where variance of resistance is
required.
VOLTAGE REGULATOR
A voltage regulator is designed to automatically maintain a
constant voltage level.
The LM7805 series of three-terminal positive regulators are
available in the TO-220/D-PAK package and with several
fixed output voltages.
TRANSISTOR
Transistor is semiconductor device used to amplify the signals
and as a switching element.
Emitter Base and collector are three terminals in transistor.
Types of Transistors
a) NPN Transistor
b) PNP Transistor
BATTERY
An electric battery is a device consisting of one or more
electro chemical cells with external connections provided to
power electrical device.
A Battery gives regulate DC supply.
L.E.D.

A Light Emitting Diode is a semiconductor device that

emits visible light when current passes though it.
Used as a indicator light in electronic circuit.
APPLICATIONS

U.P.S. generally used, where data loss causes a serious

problem like in:-
Computers
Operation Theaters
Banks
Control Room applications
Backup Power Supply
Solar Plant
CONCLUSION
U.P.S. is used to give back up power supply to load which
needs the existence of electrical power in under normal
and also emergency condition.
Uninterrupted power supply can be ensured with the
U.P.S. system along with the security.
U.P.S. is used where power failure can cause critical
problems.
