Genesis
&
the Creation
Genesis
The Book of Genesis (from Greek , meaning
"origin"), is the first book of the Hebrew Bible (the Tanakh)
and the Christian Old Testament.

The basic narrative expresses the central theme: God

creates the world and appoints man as his regent, but man
proves disobedient and God destroys his world through the
Flood. The new post-Flood world is equally corrupt, but
God does not destroy it, instead calling one man, Abraham,
to be the seed of its salvation.
The story of Creation
begins with the title of the
book of Genesis, which is
taken from opening words
"in [the] beginning". Our
English title comes from
the Greek word "genesis"
meaning origin, source,
birth, or beginnings.

What must we believe about
the Creation?
1. The creation by God of all things at the beginning of time
2. The special creation by God of man
3. The formation of woman from man
4. The unity of the human race
5. The original happiness of our first parents in a state of justice
6. The divine command laid upon man by God to prove obedience
7. The transgression of that command at the instigation of the devil in the
form of a serpent
8. The fall of our original parents from their primitive state of innocence.
9. The promise of a future redeemer

make him a helper suitable for him.
Marriage
According to the Code of Canon Law, Part VII:
Marriage, nos. 1055-1062, marriage is the
intimate, exclusive, indissoluble communion of
life and love entered by man and woman at the
design of the Creator for the purpose of their
own good and the procreation and education of
children. This covenant between baptized
persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to
the dignity of a sacrament.
Not only a contract but a sacred
contract, a covenant

- because it symbolizes the

covenant between Yahweh and
man, of Christ being the groom
and the Church as the bride. Its
not simply an agreement as it has
been done in a social/civil
contract (service crew-end
contract) because its not time-
bound but a lifetime commitment

Nature of Sin
The desire to be equal to God destroyed mans
relationship with God. All sin, therefore, has its
roots in idolatrythe attempt to put
something or someone in the place of the
Creator. Most often, that someone is one's own
self.

The Patriarchs
The Patriarchs
The plan of salvation in human history begins with the call of
Abram. Abram left everything behind and followed Gods call.
After the great flood, God promised never again to destroy his
creation, even if humankind would become corrupt again. God,
instead, planned to save and redeem them. He resolved to
make a new beginning by establishing people to whom he
would reveal his words and deeds and make them his
witnesses. God chose Abram to become the patriarch of this
people.

Covenant and

A covenant is a commitment
freely entered into
It is different from a
contract in that it is based
upon faith, love and trust
A covenant is permanent in the other person while a
contract is usually based
The covenant between Abraham merely on necessity and

God, we confess a constant, unchangeable being,
always the same, faithful and just, without any evil.
- This commandment forbids: idolatry, superstition,
spiritualism, astrology, horoscopes, fortune telling,

THE SECOND COMMANDMENT:
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

What does the 2nd

as they can, they must give them material and
moral support in old age and in times of illness,

- Parents have the first responsibility for the

all the virtues. They have the duty to provide as far
as possible for the physical and spiritual needs of
their children
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT:
You shall not kill.
