WHAT IS A CURRICULM VITAE

The CV is your first opportunity to impress during your job search! It

is a living document, which will reflect the developments of your
academic and professional career, and thus should be updated
frequently.
WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED?
Your CV should include your name and contact information, an overview of
your education, your academic and related employment (especially teaching,
editorial, engineering, or administrative experience), your research projects
(including conference papers and publications), and your departmental and
community service.
Depending on the country a reference list should or not be included: For
example, for Ecuadorian Market references are recommended to be listed
within your resume but for the Korean Market you should indicate that
references are available upon request and NOT include them inside the
resume.
CONTENTS OF A RESUME
Identifying information - your name, address, telephone number and e-
mail address. Usually both local and permanent data should be indicated.
Consider including your personal URL (if appropriate).
Job objective - a brief statement indicating the type of opportunity by title
and/or function. Make sure your objective fits the type of job you want.
Educational background - list of colleges and universities attended, dates,
degrees, diplomas, and certificates with emphasis on highest-level achieved
and special training pertinent to your job objective. List your major(s) and
any concentration. You may also include your GPA and any academic
honors received at each school. Don't include high school information.
CONTENTS OF A RESUME
Experience or work history - indicate dates of employment, name of employer, city and
state, title of each position. Describe your major duties and responsibilities and relate any
notable achievements (e.g. Promotion) and/or skills developed. Use action words to
attract attention to your skills and accomplishments (refer to the action verb list in this
presentation).
Skills section - a list of specific skills and abilities most useful in your career field. For
example, computer, technical, laboratory, foreign languages. MAKE IT EASY TO FIND-
ATTRACTIVE

Activities or interests - at least a brief mention of extracurricular activities, professional

memberships and affiliations, community activities, or hobbies.

Optional categories - military record, licenses/certifications, publications, major projects

(e.g. Research), other experiences (e.g. Volunteer, travel)
TIPS FOR DESIGNING YOUR RESUME
Standard serif and sans serif fonts work best - arial, times new roman, helvetica, futura,
palatino. Avoid ornate fonts. You can use two different fonts - one for headings and one for the
rest of your text.
Font size is also important; sizes between 9 - 10 pt. Work best.
Italics and underlining. Use bold for emphasis.
Use vertical or horizontal lines sparingly, leave at least a quarter of an inch of space around the
line.
Avoid shading, shadowing, and boxes.
Do not compress or expand the space between letters or lines. Do not double space within
sections.
The resume you submit should be printed with a laser printer on white or light-colored paper.
Position your name at the top of the page on its own line; use standard address format and
place each phone number on its own line.
Do not fold or staple the resume if mailing your resume or presenting in Carrer Fair
ACTIONS VERBS

Start sentences with action verbs, not "duties

included" or "I was responsible for". Verbs
should be in the past tense for a job that is over
and present tense for a current job. The
following list of action words should be used to
accentuate tasks, functions and achievements
when describing work and other experiences:
Accomplished Enforced Operated
Achieved Enhanced Organized
Adapted Enlarged Originated
Administered Equipped Oversaw
Alleviated Established Performed
Analyzed Estimated Persuaded

COVER LETTERS WHY?
Highlight experience - A cover letter accompanies a resume being sent to
an organization for a specific position or area of interest. The well-written
cover letter highlights selective aspects of your background which best suit
the employer's needs. The cover letter bridges the gap (or "makes the
connection" instead) between your skills and experience and the
qualifications of the position.
Capture attention - a well-written cover letter commands the reader's
attention. It stimulates interest in you and your resume as well as reflects
your interest and fit within the job and organization.
Ask for an interview - the opportunity to interview is the ultimate goal of
your cover letter and resume. ASK FOR THE INTERVIEW!
CONTENT OF A COVER LETTER
First paragraph - this opening paragraph explains why you are writing the letter. State your
purpose; identify the position you are applying for and how you learned about the opening. If
someone within the organization referred you, mention the person's name and connection.

Second paragraph - explain why you are a strong candidate for this employer/job. Highlight
relevant achievements, skills and/or experience. Be specific about your accomplishments as they
relate to the job. Explain how you intend to help the employer and contribute to the organization.
Take the time to market yourself by targeting your skills to their requirements. Also, mention any
interpersonal skills that you have that add to your qualifications.

Third paragraph (optional) - this extra paragraph can be included if there is additional
information that hasn't been mentioned on your resume, or needs to be described in more detail.

Closing paragraph - the final paragraph describes next steps, which will depend on the specifics
of the job posting or your request for an interview.

AFTER INTERVIEW!
WHAT IS NEXT?
SENT A THANK YOU LETTER!
This is one of the most important, yet least used, tools in a job search. Fewer than 20 percent of candidates bother to
extend this basic courtesy. The thank you letter shows your appreciation, and is an excellent opportunity to market
your skills and interest in the position.
Thank you letters should be sent as soon as possible after the interview, preferably within 24 hours.
It is best to send thank you notes by e-mail for quick receipt.
If you are interviewed by a committee, you may opt to send one letter to the committee chairperson asking that they
share it with the other members.
State that you remain interested in the job, and in taking the next steps.

Check out your social media while applying for jobs, try to avoid not beneficial photos on Facebook, Twitter ,
Instagram, and other social media .

START-UP COMPANIES IN KOREA
Since 2014 the Korean Government has created the OASIS
program with the main purpose of assisting international
students to create start-ups companies in korea and also
assisting them with visa issues.

With this program students are able to apply for the start-up
visa d-4 and have the opportunity to legally registered their
business in korea.

More info: click here

OASIS POINT SYSTEM: ITEMS AND POINTS
In order to obtain a start-up visa (D-8-4), the applicant is required to have basic qualifications, such as a
bachelor's degree and corporation establishment, and earn 80 points or more out of a total of 360
points, given according to items such as completion of specific OASIS courses, possession of intellectual
property ownership, a visa, capital stocks, korean language skills and others.

Last year, 126 foreigners participated in the pilot project, and 5 of them have obtained start-up visas (d-8-
4). The full-fledged OASIS project has been further promoted and 132 foreigners have joined this year.
HOW DOES THE POINTS SYSTEM WORKS?
Requirements for start-up visa (D-8-4)
Bachelors degree + corporation establishment + 80 points or more points earned out of total 360 points (at
least one required item should be included.)
Completion of basic intellectual property course (OASIS-1; korea invention promotion association) (elective, 15 points)

Completion of the advanced intellectual property course (OASIS-2; korea invention promotion association) (elective, 25 points)

Completion of the start-up class (OASIS-4; korea immigration service foundation and seoul global center) (elective, 25 points)

Completion of the start-up coaching and mentoring service (OASIS-5; korea immigration service foundation and seoul global center) (elective, 15 points)

Achievement of the 3rd or higher prize at invention, start-up exhibitions (OASIS-6; co-hosting) (required, 25 points)

Completion of the start-up incubator (OASIS-7; korea immigration service foundation and seoul global center) (elective, 15 points)

Foreigner's business start-up item recognized by the minister of justice and selected as a central or local government-supported project (OASIS-9) (required, 25 points)

[Notes]

If there are more than one inventor (participant) for intellectual property rights (registered or applied for) and start-up items (OASIS-6 and OASIS-9), the total points divided by the
number of inventors (participants) are recognized only.

When more than two items are from the same category, they are counted as one. (E.G.: 10 points are awarded even with the three design application cases.)

Oasis courses can be individually enrolled (however, participants cannot take oasis-2 before oasis-1).
