Design of Miniature gearbox

1. Design a gearbox to provide output shaft torque of 0.5 N-m
2. Providing center distance between output shaft and input
shaft of 56 mm
3. Design a gearbox without backlash in gears
4. Design a gearbox without interference in gear
5. Selecting a self lubricating material to avoid lubrication
6. Making assembly of gearbox simple

Design of Miniature gearbox

Is a small gearbox

Application
RADAR control mechanism in defense

Design of Miniature gearbox

1. Reduced strength of gear teeth due to interference
2. Loss of power due to backlash
3. Both input and output shaft are in same axis
4. Lubrication is necessary

Design of Miniature gearbox

1. Simple in design
2. Compact
3. Maintenance free
4. Minimum axial force
5. Corrosion resistant

Design of Miniature gearbox

4. Housing plates
5. Fasteners

Design of Miniature gearbox

1. Center distance X = 56 mm
2. Driver shaft speed N1 = 1500 rpm
3. Driven shaft torque T = 0.5 N-m
4. Velocity ratio N1/N2 =1/(1/180)
= 180/1

Driver Gear

Design of Miniature gearbox

1. Simple in design
2. High efficiency
3. Low manufacturing cost
4. Low axial thrust
5. Load tolerance

Design of Miniature gearbox

Design procedure

1.Finding no of stages required

2.Finding each stage reduction
3.Assuming 20stub teeth involute system
taking no of teeth on pinion is 14 teeth
4.Finding no of teeth on each gears
i = N1/N2 = Z2/Z1

Design of Miniature gearbox

Stage - 3 having minimum speed so select that pair for design.
N 5 = 41.66 rpm N 6 = 8.33 rpm

For 200 stub teeth involutes system
