INTRODUCTION:
Total annual loss of productivity of major crops due to soil

erosion in India is 7.2 million tons

Almost 66% of land area is covered with dense forest and

towering mountain with population about 81 person per sq km

The climate of the area is hot, moist, and humid with annual

rainfall 1600mm
Area of the slop ranges from 8-15%

Available irrigation potential from all sources in the district is

10.1% in kharif and 2.6% in rabi

3
Cont.
The monthly maximum temperature varies from 31.1C to

43C and minimum temperature varies from -0.6C to 10.7C

Relative humidity varies from 62% to 83%

About 75% of the crop area is under uplands and cultivable

area is about 134 thousand hectres

4
Objective:
To analyse the climatic data of the study area and find out
suitable cropping period and sequences based on monthly
water balance

To estimate the extent of soil loss under prevailing

conditions and as per the suggested cropping patterns

5
Materials and Methods:
The monthly effective rainfall was calculated from the total monthly

rainfall using USDA Soil Conservation Service method and monthly

reference crop Evapo-transpiration(ET ) was calculated from climatic
data
The values of 80% (C) were correlated with (Kc) values to suggest

the cropping period

Crops like rice, ragi, maize, arhar, groundnut and other crops and

vegetables as per local affinity were planed and scheduled in the

selected cropping period as per land type
Rate of soil loss was calculated using (USLE) equation
6
The Linear Programming model suggested to take up food crop

in an area of 1,30,777 ha with cropping intensity of 161 per cent

As an option perennial grass cover in 3,223 ha also taken

Figure 1: Comparison of model results with present situation

The rate of soil loss as per cultivable area (t/ha ) was 94.23t/ha
but after suggested by model it reduced to 70.82 t/ha
The model was found to be useful in respect of lesser soil loss of
23.41t/ha
9
Conclusion:
The total cropping period was estimated to be 210 days
from June to December
The maximum soil loss was estimated from single-
cropped its value was 48%
The minimum soil loss was estimated from three-cropped
its value was 40%
After suggested by model the rate of soil loss reduced to
70.82 t/ha where the present rate was 94.23 t/ha
