APA REFERENCE LIST

Reference list: a list of the full publication details

of the information sources you have cited in
your text. Whereas bibliography: a list of the
publication details of all works you consulted
when researching your work, not just those cited
in your text.
The reference list has two main purposes; first,
to identify and acknowledge the source of the
information; second, to enable the reader to
retrieve the original authors work, if required. To
fulfill these purposes, it is important that the
reference list contains fill publication details of
each work in the correct APA format.
The APA style has key features as follows:
Page layout: start the reference list on a new
page at the end of your essay or research
report. Center the word References at the
top of the page; do not underline, italicize or
bold this heading. All the reference entries
should be double-line spaced, with no extra
line spaces between each entry.
Indents: A hanging indent is used. That is, the
first line of the reference entry is set flush left
and the subsequent lines are indented five to
seven spaces, or one tab space.
Titles: The title of the publication in each
General form of reference entries.

You may cite an article that has been

accepted for publication but not yet
printed. In this case, add in press in
parentheses instead of a year of your
publication. Do not give a year of
publication until a work has actually been
published. Also, if there is no date for a
work, write n.d. in parentheses instead.

Ordering the reference list:
Entries are listed Alphabetically, according to authors name
Where a work has two or more authors, the position still
based of the first author
Where several works by the same author are included, list
them chronologically, starting with oldest till the recent.
If several works of same author published in same year,
order reference according to the title. To distinguish them,
add a lowercase letter to the year of publication (e.g.
1999a, 199b), based on alphabetical order title.
Some works will have the same first author but different co-
authors. Place them in order alphabetically, acording the
surename of second author
One-author entries precede multiple-author entries
beginning with the same surname.
Special cases for ordering
references
When deciding the alphabetical order or
references, treat the prefixes Mac, or Mc as the
spelt = Mc
Surnames originating from language other than
english can start with the articles or the
preposition such as de, von, or van. use the
prefix. For chinesse, use the first name as
surname. E.g. Kim, Y. & Kim. Kitao, S., Kathleen
and Saeki, Nami.
Some documents suc as newsletter and journal
articles, may identify as the author a group or
organization (e.g. The department of Family
Servces) rather than specific person. Place in
