The history of EDM
Background Information

During the 1970s to 1980s EDM became popular in

discos. Within the late years of 1970s, disco music and
rave music began to gradually move away from its
traditional orchestra (acoustic orchestras) and in its
recordings.
In the mid 1980s to the early 1990s, discos popularity
weakened but electronic production dominated new
popular dance music styles such as electro; industrial,
freestyle, house and techno
Timeline: Artists over time

1970s: Bee Gees, Stayin alive, Saturday night

2000s: Where's your head at, Rooty
2010s: Only girl (in the world) Rhianna
Key tracks which influenced the development of EDM

The Bee Gees were a band from the beginning of the EDM styled music.
People favoured the dance floor hits of the 70s, the comeback hits of the
80s & 90s and the string of hits they wrote for various artists along the way.
Deadmau5 In terms of visibility and the ability to steer vital industry
conversations, Deadmau5 (real name: Joel Zimmerman) is not only dance
music's most opinionated and polarizing figure but also one of its most
powerful.
David Guetta on top dance/electronic artist at the 2016 Billboard Music
Awards, backed by two collaborative Hot 100 hits, "Hey Mama" (with Nicki
Minaj, Afrojack and Bebe Rexha) and "Bang My Head" (with Sia and Fetty
Wap).
Techniques
A synthesizer is a device which generates sounds electronically.
A sequencer is designed for inputting, editing, storing and playing back data from a musical
performance.
A sampler is a device that can take any sound that is put into it, process it and play it back. A
sample is a digitally recorded fragment of sound: it could be an bass guitar riff, a song chorus,
sound of breaking glass, or indeed anything. the
Looping is where a short sample is repeated over and over again.
A Vocoder is a speech processor which makes a human voice sound synthetic with a robotic effect.
Remixing is where record producers take an original track and make a new version by changing
the style and balance, adding new parts and taking away ingredients of the original. Ableton Live
software has recently enabled DJs to do live remixing.
Chorus is an effect sounding as though there are several instruments or voices where there is
really only one. It is created by taking an audio signal and mixing it with several delayed copies of
itself.
Delay refers to any type of effect that adds a delayed version of the original signal, to create
effects such as reverb or echo.
Reverb (short for reverberation) can be created artificially in recording and is the most commonly
used studio effect.
Panning is the positioning of a sound in the stereo field. It may be used to give the impression that
the sound is moving from side to side, or it may stay fixed.
EDM fashion
-Walking through a festival today, we no longer see the iconic phat pants
and midriffs of the early 90s. We have to acknowledge that festival fashion
trends are also influenced by street fashion trends. What does that have to
do with more skin? What was deemed inappropriate in the 90s is more
widely accepted today. This is reflected in rave fashion as the peek of
midriff from 90s rave babes was scandalous then, but seems modest
enough now as ravers and non-ravers of this generation show more skin
than that in their everyday fashion choices. People also seem to forget that
rave fashion is supposed to be different, controversial, and rebellious.

-Rave style by the late 1990s and early 2000s was heavily influenced by
LAs roots in hip hop culture. Adidas shoes and bell bottoms became a
wardrobe staple along with cropped baby doll shirts. In the 2000s we saw
another shift in rave fashion trends with the introduction of kandi culture.
Furry accessories became more popular and party goers started integrating
go-go inspired elements, such as fluffies, to their outfits. Tutus are still worn
ravers today however, were seeing more and more girls opt for flirty micro-
skirts and micro shorts with cut outs. Smiley faces of the early 90s are still
very popular and theres even a new familiar face trending: Aliens,
mermaids, hologram, and psychedelic prints are favourites in festival
fashion and with the emergence of improved technology, all over prints are
now flooding the dance floor.
Technology and Instrumentation
Turntables appeared in the 1970s and had a big effect on the dance scene because it lent itself
to scratching. A pitch control enabled the user to speed up or slow down records so that two
records could be 'beatmatched' and songs could be mixed together
The Roland CR and TR drum machines were the first to have programmable rhythms. Drum
machines have mostly been replaced by computer-based sequencers using sampled drum
sounds.
Typical tools for EDM production: computer, MIDI keyboard and mixer/sound recorder.
Synthesizers can make more than one sound; they can create otherworldly tones, the sweet
music of flutes, or the sounds of the ocean. Synthesizers achieve these sounds by manipulating
and combining traditional sounds to create a new sound.
Sub genres

The six subgenres I have researched and explored are:

Trap
Hardstyle
Down Tempo
Grime
House
Techno
Trap
Notable Subgenres: n/a
Notable Artists: Heroes x Villains, CRNKN, Carnage, Mayhem, UZ, Flosstradamus, Baauer, RL
Grime, Branchez, Brillz
Notable Labels: Mad Decent/Jeffree's, Fool's Gold
Trap, in an EDM sense, is the 808-heavy sound that dance music producers have been working
within since early 2012. southern rap artists like T.I. and Young Jeezy. EDM producers started
applying the build-ups, drops, and breakdowns found within many dance music genres to this
style of production. An obvious beginning to this scene was Flosstradamus' remix of "Original
Don" by Major Lazer, complete with samples culled from the infamous Trap-A-Holics mixtape
series, and the sound exploded, to the point where previously-unknown artists like Baauer were
catapulted to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year.

Hardstyle
Notable Subgenres: Hard Trance, Hard Dance, Happy Hardcore
Notable Artists: Showtek, Headhunterz, Wildstylez, Angerfist, DJ Issac, Tuneboy, Psyko Punkz
Notable Labels: Scantraxx, Fusion
The hardstyle of today is typified by tracks around 150BPM that are heavy on the distorted kicks
thrown under catchy melodies. People have loved the sound, as it has roots in gabber and old
hardcore styles, but its slowly sweeping into the American EDM scene.

Down Tempo
Notable Subgenres: Chillout, Lounge
Notable Artists: Moby, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Nightmares on Wax, Boards of Canada
Notable Labels: Warp
Raves were famous for having "chillout" areas, where you could escape the hard-hitting beats
of the various rooms and just relax. You needed music to accompany those spots, and while
ambient was always good mood music, people still needed grooves. The slower paced tracks,
still steeped in dance music, were perfect soundtracks for these spots, and became a slick
genre all its own. It carried the same aesthetic that EDM did, but at a slower, calmer pace.

Grime

Notable Subgenres: 8-Bar

Notable Artists: Terror Danjah, Wiley, Tempa T, Dizzee Rascal, Kano
Notable Labels: Butterz, No Hats No Hoods
Grime, like drum & bass, is a genre born from a number of different sounds. You can trace parts
of dnb, garage, hip-hop, and dancehall as influences. Packed with half-time beats at one
moment. Grime is also one of the genres that, while the producers are definitely important,
features the MCs as the bigger stars. Grime has remained an underground phenomenon, even if
acts like Dizzee Rascal and Kano have received mainstream love.

House is one of the most popular forms of EDM. It's almost three decades old, and is one of the
truly American-born styles. It grew in Chicago, rising from the aftermath of disco. the "four-to-
the-floor" sound is one of the most recognizable forms of EDM in clubs and on the mainstream.

Notable Labels: Music On, Intec Digital, Drumcode, Bromance Records, Boys Noize Records.
It is one of the genres that's been around the longest. Another American-born style, techno
got its start in Detroit, where DJs loved the sounds of Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and
Giorgio Moroder, but wanted to inject some soul into the deep digital sounds. Once Europe
got a hold of the sound, it exploded, spawning a number of different scenes worldwide, with
everyone from U2 to Madonna using the long-loved style in their own work. Today, you can
find artists like Richie Hawtin and Nicole Moudaber still crafting proper techno productions.
