The Fall of the Roman Empire

Barbarian Invasions
-The Roman Empire was very large, too large to protect from
Barbarian attacks (non-Roman tribes) such as the Germanic tribes
who were drawn to Rome for its wealth and to escape the Huns.

The Weakening Economy

- The Roman Empire became unsafe and a lot of money was
spent of the army to protect the cities.
- This hurt their economy, which meant they had to increase taxes.
-Poor farming practices resulted in less trade
The Last Roman Empire
-Constantine I was the last emperor of a united Roman
Empire. His death in 337 CE divided Rome into Eastern and
Western Empires
-As invasions by the barbarians began to increase the
Roman Empire was defeated and the date 476 CE marks
the official end of the Roman Empire.

-The fall of the Roman Empire gave way to the Medieval

period in Europe, which lasted from circa 500 CE 1500 CE.
