Environment Management & Pollution

Control in thermal Power Plant

Thermal power plants are categorized
as one of the grossly polluting
industries anywhere in the world.
Thus our responsibility towards
environment is enormous and
therefore to prosper in this business
by protecting the environment and
achieving sustainable development
we have to set our goals and to meet
the goals time bound actions are to
Our Goals should include not only ensuring
compliances with all applicable statutes but
also achieving internal standards which are
more stringent .The existing processes are
improved upon and new processes are
devised . Techno-economically viable state
of the art technologies should also be
adopted to achieve the in house standards.
Environmental performances and its impact
on environment need proper monitoring and
wherever needed the environment
management systems should be revised
Charter Of Corporate Responsibility for
Environment Protection(CREP)

compliance by voluntarily adopting

clean technologies , it endorses the
action points of the Charter
formulated for Thermal Power Plants.
Our generating Stations should follow
the guidelines and achieve the
targets set by the Charter
Following are the Environment Management practices to be taken
in TPP :
Installation of High efficiency Pollution Control equipment.
Zero- discharge concept to be adopted during design of Power Plant.
For treatment of domestic waste water, Sewage Treatment Plants to be
installed in plant and residential colony. The treated sewage water
should be used for horticulture.
Fly ash collected using dry ash collection system must be utilized for
Fly ash bricks/ tiles making, cement making etc.
To control fugitive emission, cross country pipe conveyor should be
installed for transportation of coal. Water sprinkling is to be carried at
transfer points, loading and un-loading points.
Bio gas plant should be installed in order to recycle the kitchen waste.
Un-utilized fly ash is to be used for the backfilling of Coal mines along
with Overburden.
Piezometers should be installed for regularly monitoring of Ground
water quality around ash pond
Online monitoring systems for emissions and ambient air quality are to
be installed
Awareness programs on Environment Protection should be also carried
out with wide participation.
Pollution Control Activities

The pollution control activities include

following:
Emission control
Effluent control and effluent recycling
Ambient air monitoring
Solid waste management
Hazardous waste management
Plantation
Emission Control

Our constant Endeavour should be to

contain the particulate emission from
pulverized fuel fired Generating
Stations not only within the stipulated
norms but to achieve the internal
targets set well below the statutory
limits.
Boilers should be retrofitted with
state-of-art emission control .
Flue Stacks :

In Pulverized fuel fired Generating Stations tall stacks are to be

provided for extensive dispersion of particulates and other gases
emitted due to combustion of coal.
Electrostatic Precipitators :
Particulate emission from the boilers are to be controlled by highly
efficient Electrostatic Precipitators .

Wet Electrostatic Precipitators :

Flue gas Conditioning :

Particulate emission at all our pulverized fuel (p.f) fired

Generating Stations are to be reduced through flue gas
conditioning by means of controlled ammonia dosing in the flue
path prior to electrostatic precipitation.

Low-NOx Burners :

At Generating Station Low-NOx burners are to be provided to

control NOx emission. NOx emission is also reduced by adopting
measures for efficient combustion of fuel at Generating Stations.
On line emission monitoring equipment :
Opacity meters to be installed at p.f fired Generating Stations monitor
the level of particulates continuously and also provides the feed back to
the automated flue gas conditioning system which in turn controls the
rate of conditioning accordingly. Digital video cameras also be installed
for continuous visual monitoring of emission quality.
Continuous monitoring equipment for monitoring SOx and NOx are also
to install at the Generating Stations.

On line data acquisition and management :

In order to have a close watch on the level of particulate emission these
data should be displayed continuously not only on the control panels of
Control Rooms at Generating Stations but also in much larger format
special displays on top the panels alongside the most important
performance parameters of the power station. This facility not only
makes monitoring easier for the operating personnel but also drives
them to attach utmost importance to the parameter.
These real-time data are also to be displayed continuously at the
Station Managers desk through local area networks of respective
Generating Sations , to office at the Companys Head Office and to the
Corporate Environment Cell through intranet.
GHG Emission and Clean Development Mechanism credit

The Company should focus on energy efficient technologies and on

adoption of various energy efficiency improvement measures in the
Generating Stations to accomplish this mission.

Registration of projects with UNFCCC for Carbon Credits. Our focus

should be on energy efficient technologies and adoption of various
energy efficiency improvement measures in the Generating Stations.
We should reduce energy consumption per kwh of energy generation
And original auxiliary fuel combustion system should be upgraded with
more energy efficient technology. In both cases, there will be significant
saving in coal consumption resulting in reduction in CO 2generation.
n Schedules:
will be three facets to design and follow the schedules viz.:
r compliance of responsibilities,
day-to-day operation and management of ETP and ECE, and
routine environmental monitoring, to assess the impact and take timely warning
wo are already explained above by CPCB Publications. The schedule,
d aspect is:
Compliance:

ntain the electricity consumption record for pollution control.

nitor ambient/work zone noise levels & ensure conformance to standards.
erly Compliance:
nitor the ambient air quality at upwind and downwind locations of the factory.
iew the Water Reuse performance.

14
Compliance:

t, 1977.
