Wind Turbines- A Brief
Introduction
The gearboxes in the traditional horizontal axis wind

turbines currently have an average life span of 1.5

years

The rotor diameters can reach upto over 160m

The blades rotate with a centrifugal acceleration of

around 7-8 g magnitude

The lifespan of a modern turbine is pegged at around

120,000 hours or 20-25 years, however, they are not

maintenance free.

In general, annual average wind speeds of 5 meters

per second (11 mph) are required for gridconnected

applications.

What Is Vibration?
Any motion that repeats itself periodically is called VIBRATION or
OSCILLATION.

As an example- A pendulum swinging about its mean position is an

example of vibration.

The Problem Of Vibrations

Consistent vibrations lead to fatigue of the blade materials.

This reduces the life of the blades and may lead to premature failure

Undamped vibrations pose an existential threat to the surrounding

area as well

Modes Of Vibration For
Turbine Blades
Conventionally, the modes of vibration
for the blades are classified as-

1) Flap-wise vibration.

These vibrations occur in a plane

perpendicular to the leading and
trailing edges of the blade.

2) Edgewise vibration.

Edgewise vibrations occur in a

plane through the leading and trailing
edges.

Vibration Damping
Techniques For Wind
Turbine Blades
Different damping techniques include

1) Tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD).

2) Roller dampers.

3) Self-tuning impact damper.

We now see the two most commonly used techniques in detail

Department of Mechanical Engineering 3/17/17 11

Tuned Liquid Column
Dampers (TLCD)
Utilise the sloshing motion of the
fluid to suppress structural
vibrations.

TLD with small mass can

effectively suppress edgewise
vibration.

Liquid part of the TLD should be

assumed to be any type of fluid.
For example, all types of liquids,
certain types of gasses, etc. The
possibilities is unlimited.

Roller Dampers
The roller damper consists of a roller rolling inside an arc track.

Depending on the available space inside the hollow blade, the track
may be devised in the form of a complete circle or an arc.

Types of Roller dampers

Homogeneous Ball

Homogeneous Cylinder

Flywheel

Department of Mechanical Engineering 3/17/17 14

Conclusion
1. For effectiveness, the TLD is required to be placed close to the blade
tip where the thickness is small, and the width of the damper needs
to be small accordingly

2. Extensive parametric studies are presented to evaluate the influence

of various system parameters, such as mass ratio, frequency ratio,
friction coefficient and mounting position of the damper. The results
reveal that better performance of the roller damper can be obtained
by increasing the mass ratio and mounting the damper closer to tip.
