What Rating Scale Measure

Most of the scale used in psychiatric research
are ordinal scale in which numbers are used
as labels for different categories reflecting an
increased order for item being measured. For
example 0 = normal, 1 = slight, 2 = mild, 3 =
moderate, 4 = severe
SPESIFIC RATING SCALE
TYPES

Diagnostic Scales : assesment tool that
identify spesific mental disorder. Example
Present State Examination (PSE), Composite
International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI),
Schedules for Clinical Assesment in
Neuropsychiatric (SCAN) dll
Symptom Based Scale : Many rating scales in
psychiatric are based on the assesment of
particular symptoms. Example Brief
Psychiatric Rating Scale
SPESIFIC RATING SCALE
TYPES

Diagnosis Spesific Scales : Designed to be
used for spesific psychiatric diagnoses.
Example Positive and Negative Scale for
Schizophrenia (PANSS), Hamilton Depression
Rating Scale
Self Rated VS Rater Administrated Scale
Some rating scales are designed to be self
rated. Advantages to self rated scales are
primaily the ease of administration. Example :
Beck Depression Inventory

Other Dimensions of Outcome : include the
important domain of quality of life. Example :
Quality of Life Interview, Quality of Being Well
Scale. Another clinical outcomes is patient
satisfaction and patient perception of care,
example Client Satisfaction Questionnare and
Drug Attitude Inventory
HAMILTON RATING SCALE ANXIETY

The HAM-A (HARS) is the most widely used
utilized assesment scale for anxiety symptoms
was originally intended to be used to evaluate
individuals who are already diagnosed with
anxiety disorder
HAMILTON RATING SCALE FOR
DEPRESSION

Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-
D/HDRS) : the most widely utilized rating scale
to asses symptoms of depression
YOUNG MANIA RATING SCALE

Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) is probably
the most frequently utilized rating scale to
asses manic symptoms.
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SYMPTOM
SCALE

Positive and Negative Symptom Scale is a 30
item rating scale that is specifically developed
to asses individuals with schizofrenia and used
very widely in research setting.
 ADAPTIVE BEHAVIORS SCALE

A tool to evaluate functioning and behavior
disorder in children and adolescents with
mental retardation, autism, or other
developmental disabilities.
the ABS may be particularly use full in
determining wich children may require special
educational setting .
