BIOMES

Seventh grade
Science
First term 2017
Learning objective 2
Objective: To value Gods creation by learning about the Ecosystem and
its components.
Learning objective:
Identifying the vocabulary related to the Ecosystem to describe the
environment.

Biblical principle:
Jonahs Anger and Gods Kindness
Jonah 4:6 (NKJV)
And the LORD God prepared a plant and made it come up over Jonah,
that it might be shade for his head to deliver him from his misery. So
Jonah was very grateful for the plant.
SUCCESSION
It is the gradual growth of new organisms in and
environment.
Primary Succesion happens when a brand new
ecosystem begins to grow. These changes occur over
time.
Secondary Succesion happens when an ecosystem has
been wiped out and begins to regenerate itself and start
anew. The changes occur quicker.
Biomes
Biomes are regions of the world with similar
climate, animals and plants. There are
terrestrial biomes andaquatic biomes.
Main difference between biomes is climate.
Terrestrial Biomes:
1. Deciduous forest: Only biome with four
seasons. Trees bloom in the spring and
lose their leaves in the fall.
Foxes, bobcats and songbirds
live here.
2. Tropical Rainforest:
Leopards, toucans, and monkeys live here. Climate is
warm and humid year round.
Heavy rains help forest lush and green.
3. Taiga:
Largest of all biomes.
Stretches across Canada, Europe, and Asia.
It has two seasons: Cold winters and warm summers.
4. Tundra:
Climate is so cold and frozen, no trees can grow.
Dwarf-like plants only bloom eight weeks a year.
5. Desert:
Climate is hot an very dry.
Receives less than ten inches of rain per year.
6. Grassland:
Found in United States, Africa, Asia, and South America.
Grains like corn, wheat, and barley grow here.
Gazelles, zebras, and rhinoceros live here as well as lions
and tigers.
Aquatic ecosystems:
There are two kinds of aquatic ecosystems:
*Freshwater ecosystem (ponds, swamps, and bogs)
*Saltwater ecosystems (ocean)
Saltiness is the main difference between the freshwater
and the saltwater ecosystems
Freshwater ecosystems are not salty.
Saltwater ecosystems:
Water is very salty.
Has different zones where organisms live.
In open ocean:
a. Intertidal: Zone where tide comes in and out.
Fish like crabs, mussels and barnacles live here as well as
plankton which floats on water and make oxigen.
b. Open ocean upper region:
Nekton: Organisms that float in water.
c. Open ocean lower region:
Benthos: An organism that is a botton dweller.
