THE INTERNET…

BANE OR BOON???
INTRODUCTION………..
THE INTERNET
Or more commonly the NET is not , as many
people think ,just about COMPUTERS.
It’s about people ,communication & information
sharing.
It’s a way of overcoming physical boundaries
,like distance,
To allow MINDS to meet.
THE INTERNET
The INTERNET is the fastest growing mean of
Communication on earth. With over 300
million users, it will soon out grow the
television.
Soon, everything will be INTERNET related,
therefore , its great thing to learn about
internet, and this presentation is created just
for that.
THE INTERNET
*WHO?
Who can use the Internet, you ask? Any one, with a
computer, a modem, and an ISP or online service
he/she can connect to.
*WHAT?
What is the internet? In one sentence, the internet is
a bunch of computers linked together in sub-
networks , that connect to the main network.,
which is the backbone, where all the information
is passed all around the world.
THE INTERNET
*WHERE?
The internet is not in one place. The internet is
billions of different files {like music files, HTML
files, movies ,etc.} stored on millions of computers
all around the world.
*WHEN?
The internet started out as a military research project
called
ARPANET in 1960’s.It only started to get popular in
late 1980’s though.
It has often been said that for great art to be born ,the artist must
go through great suffering .The ’Internet’ something that has
changed the human race forever was born out of hardship. The
Internet when it was ‘INVENTED’ was not intended to be
what it is today.
THE COLD WAR
In the late 1960’s , during the height of the cold war, a time
when entire human race lived in a state of passive fear due to
the nuclear stockpiles of the super powers , the first seeds of
today’s internet were sown .The Department of Defense of the
United States wanted to be able to build a computer network
that would carry on functioning even if one center went down.
Their founding started of an experimental network known as
ARPANET {Advanced Research Projects Agency}…
UNIVERSITIES JUMP IN
With the passage of time , the cold war became less acute
& the defense department less paranoid .They allowed
universities in the United States to
Connect to the network. This was probably the best
move they had ever made, because putting such
technology into the hands of energetic intelligent youth
really took the internet places…
ENTER THE WORLD

By the Early 90’s the Internet began moving away from the
regulated rules of NFSNET {which only allowed the
network to be used for Educational & Research purposes}
towards Commercial network run by regular commercial
companies. Computers from other continents began
connecting to the networks in the US .The INTERNET as
we know it TODAY began to take shape…
One of the best features of the internet is the
ability that it gives you to download.
Downloading is a process by which a file from the
internet is copied on to your computer
.Graphics, sounds, movies, text, and even
programs can be downloaded. And, in most
cases, it doesn’t cost anything to download.
Sometimes, you may be required to buy
software before downloading it.
Q: What are SHAREWARES & FREEWARES?
A: SHAREWARES & FREEWARES , both are
types of software, but with a bit difference
between each other.
*SHAREWARE*
Shareware is a version of a commercial product
that ,may lack certain features {crippled} .It is
free to download a shareware program, however
it‘ll more than likely cost you some money to
obtain the commercial product. Some shareware
programs are the commercial version, however
some of the features have been disabled until
the correct registration code has been entered.
Shareware is often known as ‘Try-
Before-You-Buy’ software,
meaning that you can try out the
product before purchasing the
commercial version.
*FREEWARE*
Freeware is free software {as the name implies}.
You don’t have to pay for it., although In
many cases the author of the program will ask
for donation, if you like the program enough.
Often times, freeware will be just as good as
shareware or commercial software, except that
its free.
Now that you know what
SHAREWARE &FREEWARE are,
let’s figure out how to get some of
theses files. We have also tried our
best to explain how to save an image
from a page .
Downloading Directly From A Web Page
When you visit a web site that has a link to a
file for downloading ,all you have to do is
click on the link, enter a file name, & save it.
Downloading From A FTP Site.
Sometime you may have to visit an FTP Site. At FTP
Sites, the files appear similar to the files in your
computer’s file manager. They are alphabetized,
show extensions, sizes, & dates, & include
directories. Navigate through the lists , clicking only
once on links { files/directories} , until you find the
file you are looking for. Often times, there will be a
READ ME file that describes all the files in the
current directory. When you’ve found the file, you’re
looking for, click once on it. Your browser will bring
up a dialog box asking you for a file name. FTP sites
can also be navigated with a FTP program.
Saving A {Web Page} Graphic.
Saving an image from a web page is really easy.
Just go to the page that contains the graphic
you want, right click on the image with your
mouse { on Macs, you must hold down the
mouse button for a few seconds} and select
Save Image as…from the menu that appears.
Give the image a name & click Save.
THAT’S IT!!!!
The Web In General!
The World Wide Web is a huge amount of
information all linked together. The information
appears in the form of web pages .
Why use the WEB?
The World Wide Web has a huge amount of
information on it. Many things are available on
the World Wide Web for educational purposes
& for fun.
How do we get to a WEB SITE?
Web pages are displayed in special
programs called web browsers. In
browsers web pages addressed by a URL,
or Universal Resource Locator. The URL
has several parts .
There are many viruses discovered everyday. Some
really exist & some don’t. Here’s some knowledge

Why Do You Think You

Have A Virus???
<1>
If anti-virus software found a virus in your
computer, it might be a false alarm. Listed
below are some common false alarms:
*Only one file is infected on your hard disk.
*The infected file is not a program {COM or
EXE}.
*The virus is not in a list of common viruses.
FALSE ALARMS:
*Virus is found in memory only & not in any
other file.
*You have more than one Anti-Virus software In
your computer.
*The Anti- Virus did not name the virus it found.
<2>
If you have one of the following given problems
in your computer & you think this is a virus,
then you are really probably wrong! Many
people think they have got a virus from the
INTERNET, but these are just problems
caused by their computer hardware, software,
or, just errors that the user has just made.
*Hard disk does not boot.
*Hard disk light seems to blink for no particular
reason.
*Floppy disk can’t be written or read.
*Strange characters or graphics appear on the
screen.
<3>
Below are some real indicators of viruses:
*Anti-Virus found many files on the disk
infected with the same virus.
*The virus was found in executable files {COM
and EXE} or in a boot sector in the disk.
*The virus is one of he common viruses.
*Several executable {COM and EXE} files on
your disk all larger than they used to be.
*Windows will not start in 32 bit disk or file
access mode.
This information could help you in many ways.
Thanks for taking time and understanding
AND…
…REMEMBER

DON’T LET THE

WEB TRAP
YOU!!!
In the last years the Internet became inseparable part of
our lives. Millions of people access the internet every
day.
At the same time the number of users of mobile
phones & devices like personal digital assistants
{pda’s} is increasing. Bringing the internet to mobile
phones & devices became the next big step in the
development of the information technologies.
There are more than one technologies trying to achieve
this task but one of them is taking the lead.
Wireless Application protocol {wap} is a specification
created by an organization called WAP forum. Wap
works on digital wireless networks & it’s Purpose is
to bring internet content & services to the Mobile
Devices like cellular phones, pagers & personal
digital assistants.
Mobile devices can not display HTML pages. The wap
specification defines two languages which are used to
create wap applications {or wap pages} –WML&
WML Script.
Wireless Markup Language or WML is a markup
language similar to HTML {but smaller} & WML
Script is a scripting language similar to JavaScript .as
a WAP developer you first have to learn WML
which is used to create WAP pages.
If you want to include behavior & executable content in
your pages you have to use WML Script.

STAY SAFE on the INTERNET. Thanks for
reading & we hope it may help you as much as
possible.
The INTERNET is one of the fastest growing
communities in the world .
In just a few years most people will have CABLE or
DSL internet access at home. A major advantage to
this will be much better search engines & ASK
sites. Search engines will be able to make their
search programs bigger & better because they
won’t have to worry about load time .Sites like
Ask.com will be able to make their programs better
for the same reasons.
Programs like FTP & NAPSTER will be much
better because downloading will be much
faster.
Any thing that involves transferring files
will explode in popularity because you
just wont have to wait for downloads to
finish. We think that use of the INTERNET
period will explode because it will be
cheap & fast. The internet may be the most
exciting medium for computers in the
FUTURE!!!
When the World Wide Web was introduced in
1993,few people suspected it would make such an
impact on the Internet,& make it one of the greatest
achievements at the end of the 20th century. Millions
of web pages exist ,gigabytes of images, sound&
text. Virtually infinite information available at your
fingertips. And as the future beckons the internet is
abut the enter a new era, where multimedia & global
communications integrate seamlessly and the world
becomes a much smaller place .
With the anvil of technology like Cable modems
and Project Oxygen ,everyone will have
enough bandwidth. Separate networks for
cable ,phone, internet etc will all be
amalgamated into one huge highly efficient
network. The Internet will be a medium for
getting phone calls across the world at the
fraction of the cost .{ This is already
happening with technologies like Net2Phone
&Internet Phone}
Telecom companies will use internet as the
carrier and will offer their clients calls at a
fraction of the current rates. The convergence
of the Internet/TV /Radio will be complete.
You will be able to watch movies over the
internet . Most your appliances will be linked
to the internet. With ipv6 in place, their will be
millions of ip addresses for every square meter
of the earth’s surface.
Every appliance in your house will be connected to the
Internet. Take this example, it may sound like FICTION,
but it will be a reality in a few years:
Your refrigerator will keep a tab on the items in the fridge.
Now suppose it found that there was a need to buy milk, it
would send a message to your shoe. The next time you
visit supermarket & pass the section where milk is
stocked, your watch will beep & flash the message that
you require to buy milk. The refrigerator could also
contact the super market over the internet and check if
they have the product you want. If not then the radio in
your car could inform you to try a different supermarket.
Does all this sound a bit too much? May be ,but the Internet is
going to change the way we live ,and by the looks of it for the
better. Bill Gates, the software entrepreneur who co-founded
Microsoft and is the worlds richest built what could be called
a ‘cyber house'. When you enter the house you would be
presented with a pin, which would tell the house you are. The
house could then use the information to be of assistance to
you. If there is a phone call for you, then the phone nearest to
you would ring, lights would turn on in the areas that lie
ahead of you & would shut of behind you. And the network
that would co ordinate all these activities, the INTERNET!
The in the internet will make transcontinental video
conferencing a reality. Companies will no longer have to
sped large sums of money flinging in and putting up
executives for meetings, doctors using some
revolutionary Virtual Reality to computer inter phases
can actually on patients located thousands of miles
away. This would bring universal health care to all, &
make the world a much better place. The Internet is not
just a network of computer, its about People &Countries
&Hope. The Internet in the FUTURE ,will take us where
we want to go, whenever we want to go…
