THE INTERNET…
BANE OR BOON???
INTRODUCTION………..
THE INTERNET
Or more commonly the NET is not , as many
people think ,just about COMPUTERS.
It’s about people ,communication & information
sharing.
It’s a way of overcoming physical boundaries
,like distance,
To allow MINDS to meet.
THE INTERNET
The INTERNET is the fastest growing mean of
Communication on earth. With over 300
million users, it will soon out grow the
television.
Soon, everything will be INTERNET related,
therefore , its great thing to learn about
internet, and this presentation is created just
for that.
THE INTERNET
*WHO?
Who can use the Internet, you ask? Any one, with a
computer, a modem, and an ISP or online service
he/she can connect to.
*WHAT?
What is the internet? In one sentence, the internet is
a bunch of computers linked together in sub-
networks , that connect to the main network.,
which is the backbone, where all the information
is passed all around the world.
THE INTERNET
*WHERE?
The internet is not in one place. The internet is
billions of different files {like music files, HTML
files, movies ,etc.} stored on millions of computers
all around the world.
*WHEN?
The internet started out as a military research project
called
ARPANET in 1960’s.It only started to get popular in
late 1980’s though.
It has often been said that for great art to be born ,the artist must
go through great suffering .The ’Internet’ something that has
changed the human race forever was born out of hardship. The
Internet when it was ‘INVENTED’ was not intended to be
what it is today.
THE COLD WAR
In the late 1960’s , during the height of the cold war, a time
when entire human race lived in a state of passive fear due to
the nuclear stockpiles of the super powers , the first seeds of
today’s internet were sown .The Department of Defense of the
United States wanted to be able to build a computer network
that would carry on functioning even if one center went down.
Their founding started of an experimental network known as
ARPANET {Advanced Research Projects Agency}…
UNIVERSITIES JUMP IN
With the passage of time , the cold war became less acute
& the defense department less paranoid .They allowed
universities in the United States to
Connect to the network. This was probably the best
move they had ever made, because putting such
technology into the hands of energetic intelligent youth
really took the internet places…
ENTER THE WORLD
By the Early 90’s the Internet began moving away from the
regulated rules of NFSNET {which only allowed the
network to be used for Educational & Research purposes}
towards Commercial network run by regular commercial
companies. Computers from other continents began
connecting to the networks in the US .The INTERNET as
we know it TODAY began to take shape…
One of the best features of the internet is the
ability that it gives you to download.
Downloading is a process by which a file from the
internet is copied on to your computer
.Graphics, sounds, movies, text, and even
programs can be downloaded. And, in most
cases, it doesn’t cost anything to download.
Sometimes, you may be required to buy
software before downloading it.
Q: What are SHAREWARES & FREEWARES?
A: SHAREWARES & FREEWARES , both are
types of software, but with a bit difference
between each other.
*SHAREWARE*
Shareware is a version of a commercial product
that ,may lack certain features {crippled} .It is
free to download a shareware program, however
it‘ll more than likely cost you some money to
obtain the commercial product. Some shareware
programs are the commercial version, however
some of the features have been disabled until
the correct registration code has been entered.
Shareware is often known as ‘Try-
Before-You-Buy’ software,
meaning that you can try out the
product before purchasing the
commercial version.
*FREEWARE*
Freeware is free software {as the name implies}.
You don’t have to pay for it., although In
many cases the author of the program will ask
for donation, if you like the program enough.
Often times, freeware will be just as good as
shareware or commercial software, except that
its free.
Now that you know what
SHAREWARE &FREEWARE are,
let’s figure out how to get some of
theses files. We have also tried our
best to explain how to save an image
from a page .
Downloading Directly From A Web Page
When you visit a web site that has a link to a
file for downloading ,all you have to do is
click on the link, enter a file name, & save it.
Downloading From A FTP Site.
Sometime you may have to visit an FTP Site. At FTP
Sites, the files appear similar to the files in your
computer’s file manager. They are alphabetized,
show extensions, sizes, & dates, & include
directories. Navigate through the lists , clicking only
once on links { files/directories} , until you find the
file you are looking for. Often times, there will be a
READ ME file that describes all the files in the
current directory. When you’ve found the file, you’re
looking for, click once on it. Your browser will bring
up a dialog box asking you for a file name. FTP sites
can also be navigated with a FTP program.
Saving A {Web Page} Graphic.
Saving an image from a web page is really easy.
Just go to the page that contains the graphic
you want, right click on the image with your
mouse { on Macs, you must hold down the
mouse button for a few seconds} and select
Save Image as…from the menu that appears.
Give the image a name & click Save.
THAT’S IT!!!!
