Why must I sit for
MUET?
o MUET is sat for 2 purposes :
1. For entry purposes.
UM Law B4
UKM Law / Medic B3
UPM Medic / TESL B4
UTM Engineering B4
UiTM Law B4
UUM Law / Acc / Int. Affairs B3
UMS Medic / Int Trade / TESL B4

2. For graduation purposes.


What is MUET?
o It consists of 4 separate papers:
Listening (800/2), Speaking (800/3),
Reading (800/3) and Writing (800/4)
o It is a compulsory English test for anyone
who intends to pursue his or her first
degree in tertiary level at local public
universities or colleges. (from 2017 all
unis require min B3)
o The test was first started in December
1999.
What is MUET?
o In 2006, there was a modification in
the whole test.
o It was then conducted twice a year
(May and November sessions)
o From 2012 onwards, it is done 3
times a year (March July
November)
o School candidates usually sit for the
July test session or later depending
on situation.
What is MUET?
o The examination fees for this test is
RM100
o The sessions for the test:
March July November
o Who can sit for the test? ANYONE
o Does the MUET result have an expiry
date? The result is valid for FIVE
years from the date it is announced.
(e.g. 2014 results will expire on
2019)
The MUET Test
o The MUET result does not indicate
passing or failing grades.
o It only shows the levels of English
Language proficiency of the
candidates.
o The levels or bands range from Band
1 (the lowest) to Band 6 (the
highest)
o These bands are obtained through
the accumulation of scores for each
component paper.

The MUET Papers
o The test consists of 4 component
papers:

Listening Paper 800/1
o This is a 30-minute test.
o There are 3 sections in the paper
with 20 question items.
o Question items will include
information-transfer Qs, multiple-
choice Qs and short answer /
summarizing of information Qs
o Candidates will listen to the text on
disc and answer the Qs
simultaneously.

Speaking Paper 800/2
o This is a 30-minute test.
o There are 2 tasks in the paper with
one individual task and one group
discussion.
o Questions will cover contemporary
issues like social issues, health
issues, educational issues, etc
o Candidates will present their
responses, first individually and later
as a group in a formal discussion.

TASK A
SITUATION: Hosting an international event will bring a lot of benefit to
the country. What are some these benefits?

Candidate A: You think the benefit is that Malaysia will gain international
recognition.
Candidate B: You think the benefit is that Malaysia will earn more income.
Candidate C: You think the benefit is that Malaysians will get the
opportunity to attend it.
Candidate D: You think the benefit is that Malaysian athletes will get the
support from the home crowd.

SITUATION: You have to decide which of the mentioned benefits helps
Malaysia the most.

o This is a 90-minute test.
o There are 45 multiple-choice
questions with 6 comprehension
passages that cover contemporary
issues like social issues, health
issues, educational issues, etc.
o Passages are arranged based on
their complexity levels (easier to
more difficult ones)

o This is a 90-minute test.
o There are 2 writing tasks which cover
contemporary issues like social
issues, health issues, educational
issues, etc.
o Task A is a report writing based on
non-linear texts (graphs, tables,
charts, etc.)
o Task B is a continuous writing
responding to a given statement or
view.
