(The effects) (What we do)

Human-Nature Relationships
Area of study 2 focuses on
contemporary relationships between
humans and outdoor environments (AOS
1 focussed on historical relationships).

Contemporary is understood to refer to

mainly events and interactions within the
last 10 15 years.

Area of Study 2
In this section we will be exploring the
contemporary societal relationships
with outdoor environments.
The areas we will explore include:

1. Conservation
2. Recreation
3. Primary Industries These are the only areas.

4. Tourism Practices

Contemporary Societal Relationships

Interacting with the environment for the
protection and enhancement of the
environment.

Conservation
Revegetation Dune Revegetation in
Queenscliff To avoid erosion of sand
dunes, planting of native coastal plants is
completed by volunteers.

Conservation
Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park
Established in 2002 primarily for
ecosystem protection and recreation.
There are a variety of protected plants
and animal species within the Park.
Threats to the park includes dredging of
the Port Phillip Heads.
Swan Bay contains a variety of ecosystems that make it
environmentally important for waterbirds and migratory waders.
These include salt marsh, intertidal mudflats and vast seagrass
beds on which, almost everything living in the bay relies on for
food. Although much of the surrounding land is farmland, some
remnant woodland survives in the adjoining Edwards Point Nature
Reserve and Swan Bay itself. The bay has been recognised as
having international importance and the Port Phillip Heads Marine
National Park almost entirely occupies the bay.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance,

called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental
treaty that provides the framework for national action and
international cooperation for the conservation and wise use
of wetlands and their resources.

The Ramsar Convention is the only global environmental

treaty that deals with a particular ecosystem. The treaty
was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and the
Convention's member countries cover all geographic
regions of the planet
ThePort Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline)
and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar Site

One of the Australian sites listed under the

Ramsar Convention as a wetland of
international importance. It was designated on
15 December 1982, and is listed as Ramsar
Site No.266. Much of the site is also part of
either the Swan Bay and Port Phillip Bay
Islands Important Bird Area

RAMSAR
European settlement began in 1788, conservation
was of little importance, focus on commercial use.
First national park was created in 1879.
Since 1960s an emerging awareness of the
environment and the impacts of human activity.
Most national parks and state parks have been
created in the last 35 years.
Landcare / coastcare are groups focussing on
conservation based interactions.
Enviro groups such as The Wilderness Society
reflect more politically based organisations aimed
at promoting conservation of natural environments.

Conservation
The 1960s most people went
mountain bike riding, horse
riding, and cross country
skiing.

Recreation
Extreme sports popular over the last
15 years. People are wanting to push
the limits!

Contemporary!

Recreation
Is ever expanding. Anyone can participate in any sport these days.

Recreation
Indigenous groups made time on there day to recreate. They
would learn skills, dancing, story telling.
Europeans at first did not have time (too busy clearing land,
developing the land.
As recreation time became available they would horse-ride,
picnicking and tramping in the country
Accommodation in the mountains and the coast enabled more
people to get out amongst it.
Bushwalking in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter
started to become really popular.
Between World War II and the baby boom (1950s) saw a decrease
in recreation, because most of their time was taken up working.
1960s through to the present time participation in outdoor
environments increased dramatically.
This has been supported by clubs and organisations and the range
of activities people can participate in now.

Recreation

Primary Industries are responsible for agriculture, fisheries,
earth resources, energy and forestry practices. (DPI)

Primary Industries
Diary Farming -
Shepparton

Dairy farming requires large quantities of food and water due to

energy demands of cows carrying calves. This heavily impacts on
soil and water quality of grazing land.

Primary Industries
Canola Farming in
Central Victoria

Canola farming in Central Victoria requires widespread clearing

and continual fertilizing and tilling of soil.

Primary Industries
Despite catch limits
placed on
commercial fishers,
Southern Rock
Lobster and
Abalone
populations are a
fraction of what
existed in the past.

Primary Industries
Primary Industries are responsible for
agriculture, fisheries, earth resources, energy
and forestry practices.
They design and deliver government policies and
programs that enable Victorias primary and
energy industries to sustainably maximise the
wealth and well being they generate by providing
essential goods and services, employment,
investment and recreation opportunities.
In a nut shell Primary Industries are in charge of
regulating agriculture practices in Victoria.

Primary Industries
Tourism brings an influx of
visitors who congregate on
specific coastal environments.
E.g. Torquay

This places stress on these

environments during peak
season. E.g. Rip Curl Pro /
Easter

Tourism Practices
It isnt just the coast people flock to. Historical towns such as
Beechworth receive large number of people during long
weekends and school holidays.

Tourism Practices
We even get tourists visiting
Shepparton for the wineries, and
gourmet foods on offer.

Tourism Practices
Private operators often
use the same venue for
ease of operation. This
can place stress on
access paths and local
beach environments.

Example: Torquay surf

school

Tourism Practices
Linked with the other practices.
Tourism caters to the recreation or aesthetic
appreciation that people have, and the
commercial opportunities that develop from these
interactions.
Australia is actively sold to overseas countries as
a place to visit for the quality of its natural
attractions.
Ecotourism has become a popular venture.
The early European settlers may not have seen
the environment as attractive or appealing yet
over time this attitude began to change with more
people celebrating the aesthetic aspects of the
land.

Tourism Practice
We will be looking at these 4 areas:
conservation, recreation, primary industries
and tourism practices in more detail.

We will be focussing on these areas in regards

to the Queenscliff / Port Phillip bay(our next
trip location). How do they apply to this area /
region?
