FLASHCARDS

- FLASHCARDS are very useful when
teaching contents, and specially
when teaching language.
- You can teach new vocabulary and
also language in context.
- Students learn by looking, listening,
repeating and playing games with
them.
- They allow activities with small and
also with big groups.

1. Distribute the course vocabulary or
contents into different topics. It is a
good idea if you write some word map
first including and distributing all the
contents you want to work. You can
make a card for each word or for a
chosen number of words.

2. Decide on the size of card that your
students will handle best. Generally
speaking, the younger the student, the
bigger the card needs to be. It also
depends on how big the group is. Cards of
12 x 8 cm are good, manageable size. If
they are too big, it is more difficult to
work with them in a fast way. It also
depends of the purpose you want to get,
if you want to use them for pairwork, you
dont need them to be as big as for the
whole class presentation.

3. You can include only illustrations on
the cards, only words or both illustrations
and words. You can also add the
information on one side, both or in
different cards for the students to match.
Remember that some students only
understand capital letters. It is a good
idea if you write all the information at the
back so you can read the information
easily and the students can see the
illustration/information at the same time.

You can also add different stages on the
information you write at the back so you can
add more information about that word when
students progress or use more information
with students at higher levels. E.g. You can
just teach them the word at the beginning,
then the word in a short sentence, the word in
context, etc.
It is also a good idea if you write the
pronunciation of the word, remember a lot of
students will learn from you.
Try to use the same format for your flashcards
banks.

BIRDS NATIVE TO AFRICA
It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs, and can run
at up to about 70 km/h (20 m/s; 40 mph),[5] the fastest land speed of
any bird.[6] The ostrich is the largest living species of bird and lays the
largest eggs of any living bird (extinct elephant birds of Madagascar and
the giant moa of New Zealand laid larger eggs).
The ostrich's diet consists mainly of plant matter, though it also eats
invertebrates. It lives in nomadic groups of 5 to 50 birds. When
threatened, the ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the
ground, or run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick of its powerful
legs. Mating patterns differ by geographical region, but territorial males
fight for a harem of two to seven females.
The ostrich is farmed around FLASHCARDS

world, particularly for its feathers, which

cut out of magazines and glued on.
Little children prefer real images. They
dont always associate drawings. White
background helps the students to see
the image from the distance.

the cards to

idea to cover

although this
makes them
