This case studied apartment
has direct access to the main
rood; which is easily accessible
for transportation.

Since the building is located


near to the urban center of
Adama city in that they can
freely afford different basic
facilities which is important for
human kinds.

This building has four floors;


on the ground floor there are
three caf, 1 bar, 1pharmacy
the above three floors are
apartments.

Building entry
The entry to an apartment building
provides an interface between public and
private realm. Building entry can provide
direct access in to an individual
apartment through vertical circulation

The entry have an overhang terrace


To give emphasis. Which have central
Location. Found in front of the main
road.
The entrance has this kind of character.

Room arrangement
The apartment is one bed room type and it
have two type of room orientation based
on the building existing form, at the
ground level it have many commercial
places but the apartment starts from the
first floor until the third floor.

The first floor plan

The apartment on the first


floor plan it have a big
terrace that can be used
by the residence for as a
recreatioinal purpose but
it faces the south western
sun so they cannot it at
day time.
It consists of 8 dwelling
units and every delling
units have a balcony.

In the apartment the


second and the third
floors have the same
floor plan arrangement
and they have a small
balcony facing the south
eastern sun.

Disadvantage
Open space
Open space is designed space that provides
core amenities to adjacent buildings, such as
daylight and ventilation; outlook and views; and
visual privacy. It can also provide the opportunity
for recreation and social activities and water cycle
management.
Open space can be public, private, or
communal. The scale and design of the space will
depend on the number of apartments provided and
the context of the site.

There is no open space left except


the parking area. Although it has a yard,
it doesnt have green areas.
Sanitary
Due to poor installation of the sanitary line there is a seepage of water
waste water on the wall which causes efflorescence.

it only consider small number family(each dwelling have only one


bedroom)
Structural element

Some parts of the building are not proportional with the room size like
beams that decreases the room height.
Visual privacy

Visual privacy describes how private the interior and private exterior
spaces of an apartment are from outside view. The degree of visual
privacy provided will affect residents ability to carry out private functions
within the confines of their apartment and private open space.

Its too close to the road for noise disturbing the people living in the
apartment.
Not enough pedestrian walk way.
There is poor drainage system which creates, smell to the site.
Advantage
Light and ventilation
The apartment have good
natural ventilation & lighting
system, through the provide
opening at the corridor and the
stair let the apartment to have
appropriate lighting

The site is found near to hospital/


Rift valley hospital which is in the
east direction and used by the
dwellers for emergency cases.
There is also a pharmacy on the ground floor
of the apartment.

There is a field used to different sport


activities.

There is a post office around the dwelling.

There are several banks around the


apartment.

Small windows and large enough balconies


which are depressed in the walls which makes
it well shaded.
There is space between the road and the building for movement. Its not
very close to the road.

Habitat 67 comprises 354 identical, prefabricated


concrete forms arranged in various combinations,
reaching up to 12 storey's in height. Together these
units create 146 residences of varying sizes and
configurations, each formed from one
to eight linked concrete units.

The complex originally contained 158 apartments


Each unit is connected to at least one private
terrace.

There are 18 variations in apartment types o which


15 were built which vary in size and appearance but
are all variations of one single modular concrete
unit.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN

The development was designed to


integrate the benefits of suburban homes ,
namely gardens, fresh air, privacy, and
multileveled environments, with the
economics and density of a modern urban
apartment building.

SUB COMPONENTS
Both bathroom and kitchen are
prefabricated subcomponents .

The bathroom is moulded fiberglass within a


box-kitchen as well as bathroom were fitted with
all the necessity plumbing and storage in the
factory.

Completed boxes were then assembled in the


main structure unit on site.
PREFABRICATION

1. Making the box/ preparing the reinforcing


panels.

2. Assembling the reinforcing steel cage.

3. Moving the cage into the moulds

4. Placing the inner moulds.

5. Pouring concrete

6. Pouring floor slab

7. Module with its temporary polyethylene roofs is


moved to the assembly line.

Advantage
Prepare for plenty number of dwelling unit.
Rooms are functional.
Every dwelling unit have a verandah; well
ventilated and proper lighting.
Use high quality of materials

Disadvantage
The elevators stops at every 4 levels.
Cluster planning causing open spaces.
There is no more space a place to parking and
playground
In March 2012, Habitat 67 won an online LEGO ARCHITECTURE poll and
is a
candidate to be added to the list of famous buildings that inspire a special
replica Lego set. Lego blocks were actually used in the initial planning for
Habitat; according to Safdie's firm, "initial models of the project were built
using legos and subsequent iterations were also built with legos.

STRENGTH
My choice of site is located at a very
visible place to locate.
It is 270 m from the main road side so it is
not affected by noise.
It is an empty space(you dont have to
deforest and make level for the ground.
Good environment.
Sufficient space for apartment.
There is adequate transportation .
Easy access to main road.

You can build the face of the building


one of two sides so you can fix the sun
effect.
It got plenty area, for parking and play
ground.
Access to city view.
The soil is good for building footing
construction.
Have road and circulation access in all
direction.
WEAKNESS

There is a hotel near to it so it is


affected by some food smell and
noise.as recommendation you can
location the play ground and
parking areas at the side of the
building.
OPPORTUNITY
Hospital,garage,Bank ,cinema
school ,hotel , gas station ,
shopping moll are near by the
site.
There are al lot of residential
house around it so it is suitable
to interact socially like idir,ikub.
it got enough drainage system,
water supply, road, power line
etc.

May the unfinished building is
commercial building anther noise
