File-based Systems
A collection of application
programs that perform services for
the end users (e.g. reports).

Components of DBMS
Environment
Hardware
Can range from a PC to a network of
computers.
Software
DBMS, operating system, network software (if
necessary) and also the application programs.
Data
Used by the organization and a description of
this data called the schema.

Components of DBMS
Environment
Procedures
Instructions and rules that should be applied
to the design and use of the database and
DBMS.
People
Roles in the Database Environment:
DataAdministrator(DA)
Data administrator(DA) is responsible for the management of the data
resource including database planning ,development and maintenance
of standards, policies and procedures.
Database Administrator (DBA)
Database administrator (DBA)is responsible for the physical
realization of the database ,including database design and
implementation, security and integrity control, maintenance of the
operational system, and ensuring satisfactory performance of the
applications for users.

Database Designers (Logical
and Physical)
Logical Database Designer: The logical
database designer is concerned with
identifying the data, the relationships
between the data, and the constraints on the
data that is stored in the database.
Physical Database Designer: The physical
database designer decides how the logical
database design is to be physically realized.
Application Programmer.
Responsibility of the Application
programmer: Once the database
system has been implemented, the
application programs that provide
the required functionality for the
end-users must be implemented.
End Users (native and sophisticated)
The end-users are the clients for the database, which has
been designed and implemented.
End-users can b e classified according to the way they use
the system:
Native Users are typically unaware of the DBMS.They
access the database through specially written application
programs which attempt to make the operations as simple
as possible. They invoke database operations by entering
simple commands or choosing options from a menu.
Sophisticated Users are familiar with the structure of the
database and the facilities offered by the
DBMS.Sophisticated end-users may use a high-level query
language such as SQL to perform the required operations.
