Basic terminology in
LTE 1
Resource Element : RE is the smallest unit of transmission of LTE in both UL
and DL.
RE consist of one sub carrier in frequency domain and OFDM or SC-FDMA symbol
in time domain

Sub Carrier spacing : 15KHz, no guard band between these carriers. But in
time domain,
CP is used to prevent the inter Symbol Interference.

Cyclic Prefix: Prefixing of a symbol with a repetition of the end, and receiver is
typically
configured to discard the cyclic prefix samples. It eliminates the intersymbol
interference from the
previous symbol

LTE
Time2Slot : 0.5 ms time period of LTE frame. Which has 7 OFDM symbols with
normal CP and 6 OFDM symbols with extended CP
Resource Block : Unit of transmission resource consist of 12 subcarriers in
the frequency domain and 1 time slot in time domain. It has 12*7 = 84 REs and
12*15KHz = 180KHz BW
LTE SUB frame or TTI : Two slots, 1ms in time.
LTE Frame : 10ms or 10 sub frames or 20 slots

TDD and FDD duplex

LTE has FDD and TDD duplex modes, In FDD it

is paired
Spectrum, has a separate DL and separate UL
band.

Max Data
Rate
Max throughput with Max BW
For DL
Number of RB in 20M channel = 100 RB
Number of symbol per RB 7*12 = 72 Symbol
Number of symbol per 1ms 72*2 per RB = 168 Symbol
Total number of symbol per 1ms = 16800 Symbol
Number of bits in 64QAM (no coding) = 6 bits
Total number of bits in 1ms = 100800 bits/1ms
Data rate = 100.8 Mbits/s
Consider 4x4 mimo 100.8 Mbps x 4 = 403 Mbps
Estimate about 25% overhead 403 Mbps x 0.75 = 302
Mbps.

For UL
In UL has only 1 transmit chain, data rate = 100.8 Mbits/s
Estimate about 25% overhead =75 Mbps/s

UE category =4
Modulation supported as per UE category TBS index 26 for DL
(75376 per 100RB)
Throughput = Number of chains x TB size
= 75376 x 2 = 150.752 Mbps

Sub Frame configuration Special Sub frame configuration

DL Throughput = Transmission chains x TB size x [ contribution by DL sub frame +

contribution by DwPTS in SSF]
= 2*75376*[6/10 + 10/14*2/10]
= 111.98 Mbps

UL throughput = Transmission chains x TB size x [ contribution UL sub frame +

contribution by UpPTS in SSF]
The special=subframe
1*51024*[2/10+2/14*2/10]
has three parts- DwPTS (Downlink Pilot Time Slot), GP (Guard
Period), and= 11.662
UpPTSMbps
(Downlink Pilot Time Slot). There is no "pilot" channel in LTE. The
traditional "pilot" channel is called Reference Signal in LTE. DwPTS facilitates downlink
synchronization, and UpPTS facilitates uplink synchronization. GP helps avoid interference
between the uplink and the downlink and provides the transceiver adequate time to switch from
transmit function to receive function and vice versa.
