MANUAFACTURING SYSTEM

The manufacturing system is a collection of

integrated equipment and human resources that
perform processing and assembly operations on
work material.
COMPUTER INTEGRATED
MANUFACTURING
An computer integrated system requires that there be two
or more computers connected to pass information.
 Following three components distinguish CIM from other
manufacturing methodologies;

 Means of data storage, retrieval, manipulation and

presentation;
 Mechanisms for sensing state and modifying processes;
 Algorithms for uniting the data processing component with
the sensor/ modification component.
AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING SYSTEM
Automated manufacturing system reduce level of human
participation compared with the corresponding manual
process.

Example of automated manufacturing system includes

o Automated machine tools that process parts
o Automated assembly system
o Automatic material handling and storage.
o Automatic inspection system.

NUMERICAL CONTROL (NC)

NC is a form of programmable automation in which the

mechanical actions of an equipment are controlled by a
program containing codes.

NC system consists of three basic components:

a) Part program,
b) Machine Control Unit,
c) Processing Equipment.
NUMERICAL CONTROL (NC)
 The part program is the detailed set of commands to be
followed by the processing equipment.

 MCU is a microcomputer that stores and executes a

program, by converting each command into actions by the
processing equipment.

 The processing equipment accomplishes the sequence of

processing steps to transform the starting workpiece into a
completed job.
INDUSTRIAL ROBOTICS
 An industrial robot is a general-purpose programmable
machine consisting of a mechanical manipulator and a
controller to move it.

 Robots can be used in a variety of scenarios;

 Hazardous Environments,
 Repetitive work cycle,
 Long production runs,
 Difficult work or tool handling.
PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS
(PLC)
 PLC is a widely used microcomputer based device that
uses stored data instructions in programmable memory to
implement logic, sequencing, timing, counting etc.

FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM
(FMS):
 FMS is a highly automated machining center, consisting
of a group of processing stations, interconnected by an
automated material handling and storage system, and
controlled by an integrated computer system.

 An FMS is capable of processing a variety of different

part styles simultaneously under NC control at different
workstations.
GROUP TECHNOLOGY :
 It is a method of manufacturing, in which similar parts
are grouped together and manufactured together because
of their similarities in design and production.

 Cellular manufacturing is a concept in group

technology, in which machine cells are developed where
similar processes takes place.
