Harm to Bottom Habitats

Lost fishing gear results in ghost fishing

Causes stock mortality, and excess by catch

Mobile fishing gear can damage habitat structures

Bottom structures provide shelter, food, and protection from predators

Concerns About Fish Populations & Climate Change

Warming waters + increase in acidity

Populations decrease results in low gene pool, changes in reproduction and

growth rates.

Upsets balances of predators and prey.

Resource Use & Its Impact on Keystone Marine Mammals

Disrupting the fish population can in turn impact that of whales and other marine
mammals. Some of these behaviors can severely affect people all over the world who live
i coastal areas and use fishing as their main source of protein and income. Regulations on
fishing will not take fishing away. It will simply help more people and the environment.
And its not just marine animals that are affected. For example, bears.

Using our catch effectively and not being wasteful can make food and goods go further
and can lower our catch rate.
TAC and Our Concerns

Current TAC: 590,161 mt

1. Fishing causes harm to bottom habitats

2. Fish populations are decreasing due to climate change

3. Marine mammal populations are also decreasing

Proposed TAC: 548,850 mt

Lowered by 7%
Reduction in TAC is Fair to All

Achieves optimum yield and prevents overfishing

Promotes conservation of stocks (Fish), and prevents excessive shares

Allows for variations in climate/ populations

Industries can be sustained without adverse economic impact

How To Minimize Bycatch and Costs
Minimize bycatch by fishing only species rich areas. This could save gas

Use bait that species such as turtles do not like

Escape routes for fish that shouldn't be caught. Often less costly materials and cuts
time on hand picking unwanted creatures out.

Acoustic Pingers

Don't use rope for a ground line. Use stiff rope or sinking ground-line

Catching what you need reduces gas and space costs while maximizing profit

It's a group effort

Human Safety

Improve training courses, and development of essential skills would reduce

dangers and fatalities

Restrict fishing to day time prevents fatigue, resulting in less accidents.

Practice marine safety and drills

Avoid severe weather conditions
