Courages African American War Heros

Classroom Description
- 10th Grade U.S History

- The classroom is a large setting, desks are lined up in rows. Four rows with
five desks in each row.

- Urban Setting

- My classroom will be a 10th grade social studies classroom with 20 students


attending the class. My class has 20 students, 13 of those students are
Caucasian, 5 students are African American, and 2 students are ELL who
spoke Spanish as their main language.

- African American is the selected underrepresented group.

WV Standards: SS.USC.23 Demonstrate an understanding of the course of the American Civil War and
Reconstruction in America. Identify and analyze the events which led to the secession of the south from the Union
and the formation of the Confederate States of America. Trace the major events of the Civil War and evaluate the
impact of political and military leadership during the war. Evaluate short-term and long-term effects of
Reconstruction on the nation (e.g. Civil War Amendments, radical republicans, Jim Crow).
National Standards: NSS-USH.5-12.5 ERA 5: CIVIL WAR AND RECONSTRUCTION (1850-1877)
Understands the causes of the Civil War
Understands the course and character of the Civil War and its effects on the American people
Understands how various reconstruction plans succeeded or failed

These standards are aligned with the heros of Civil War that have caused or changed major events of the Civil War. These
standards are linked to African American role models and heroes of the Civil War heros that had a major impact not only on
the Civil War but on the United States. This bulletin board will be meant to be targeted towards African American students
and will be displayed on the classroom wall.
Culturally Competent Teacher
- This bulletin board is meant to target and inspire African American students.
As a result of inspiring students it will increase their interest in the subject and
result in higher achievement.

- The images are meant for African American students feel pride in their race,
feel comfortable in the classroom, and inspire students to learn about past
figures that had major impacts on our country.
