LAN Service Tiers

Basic Wireless LAN features

Wireless LAN roaming support where
supported by an on-Site WLAN controller
Layer 2 bridging of WLAN clients to the
LAN switching environment
IP Helper for DHCP/BOOTP address
request forwarding
Support for Mars-provided MAC
authorization lists
Guest Wireless LAN access
Advanced Wireless LAN Attributes
All attributes of Basic wireless LAN plus
BT will manage, monitor, maintain, and repair all
Advanced Wireless LAN Equipment in conformance with
Schedule 3(e) (Cross-Functional Services) to meet or
exceed the applicable Service Levels
Wireless QoS support requires a QoS Project
Application Visibility and Control (AVC) Support
Self-healing wireless coverage in case of an access point
failure
High density support
High availability
Wireless LAN controller replacement in accordance with
Service Levels
Design is fully engineered and endorsed to meet BTs
Wireless LAN Service
Parameters
Sites with Local Internet Breakout must have
a local WLAN Controller
All new Wireless LAN ports added by Mars
must conform to the then-current technical
specifications
Any reused equipment must be in usable
condition and free from defects
Equipment may be reused if it is supported by the
WLAN Architecture standard, has a valid
maintenance contract (SmartNet), and is owned
by Mars.
Advanced Wireless LAN
Requirements
Advanced Wired LAN Services
Site survey performed in accordance with BTs then-current
survey standards based on the current architecture design
doc (and such standards will not unreasonably deviate from
standards utilized by relevant manufacturers and other
providers)
BTs receipt and review (not to be unreasonably withheld) of
the site survey report
Installation at the site (whether by BT or otherwise) of all
Wireless LAN access points required by the then-current site
tier requirements, and in accordance with the site surveys
Mars-provided, manufacturer-approved, maintenance
coverage (e.g., SMARTNET) on all Wireless LAN access
points (as available by country)
Enhanced WLAN
Management
Cisco Prime rollout providing:
Enhanced WLAN troubleshooting support
Enhanced Availability Reporting of
individual APs
Enhanced Configuration management
and update support
Greater performance, control and
monitoring of wireless estate
Monitoring (from SOW
Schedule 3)
BT is responsible for the proactive monitoring and
management of Services (where applicable under the
governing Statement of Work) via a support model
utilizing ITIL-based procedures in conformance with
the MOM.
The BT Service Desk will open Incidents using one
of four following methods:
Automated proactive alarm that updates BTs Incident
management system
Reactive notification via eBonding with Mars systems
BT Global Services Integrated Portal (GS Portal)
Phone call from the Mars Service Desk.
Enhanced WLAN Management Wrap

Cisco Prime rollout providing:

Enhanced WLAN troubleshooting support
Enhanced Availability Reporting of
individual APs
Enhanced Configuration management
and update support
Greater performance, control and
monitoring of wireless estate
What does Enhanced Management
really mean?
Basic up/down monitoring still in place for
the APs and WLCs
NOC has the ability to go further than
up/down analysis
Using Prime, can see the status of the
wireless network at any site
Can understand what might be causing a
specific incident
Looking to link Prime into SMARTS to allow
for stronger monitoring
What will NOC do for a wireless
incident at an Advanced site
End-to-end management
Dispatch of vendor as needed to assist with any incident
analysis
Reactive incidents
Verify if the issue is a single user or multiple users
Is the user connecting to the right SSID
If the issue is application related, it is specific to wireless
Proactive incidents
AP troubleshoot and replace using Smartnet
WLC Assess the impact to see if we lose connectivity to
any APs; potential break/fix
Remember:
BT cannot manage issues with laptops/devices
Users must be in range of the wireless APs
If usage is beyond scope of wireless survey (i.e. more
people trying to access an AP than in design), performance
What should NOC do for a wireless
incident at a Basic site
Reactive
Verify if the issue is a single user or multiple users
Is the user connecting to the right SSID
If the issue is application related, it is specific to wireless
Proactive
AP troubleshoot. Site needs to replace if needed
WLC Assess the impact to see if we lose connectivity to
any APs; potential break/fix
Remember:
BT cannot manage issues with laptops/devices
Users must be in range of the wireless APs
If usage is beyond scope of wireless survey (i.e. more
people trying to access an AP than in design),
performance will be impacted
