Identify and use relative clauses to give
informations about who or what you are
talking about.

Relative Clause
The boy is my brother. Which boy are you
talking about?

He is wearing a cap. Oh I see! The boy who is


wearing a cap is your brother.
Relative Clause
The boy who is wearing a cap is my brother.
Are you
talking
about me?

What does it refer to?

The relative pronouns (which, who or that) refer to the noun


(or noun phrase) before it.

We can use that instead of who and which.


Relative Clause
The lady who (that) talked to me last night was
Jenny.
Jenny talked to me last night.

Jenny had a company which (that) planned


weddings.

Which relative pronoun should we use?

speak Cantonese.

children of all ages.
What is it about?

Make groups of 4 to 5 and you will be given a


set of scrambled sentences.
The group that unscrambles all of them first is
the winner.
Guess Who?

Pair up!
Each student must give to his/her partner a clue of a
famous actor/actress, the other one should be able to
guess who the actor is.

Example:
She is the woman who stars in Basic Instinct Sharon
Stone.

Class 2
Objective: Make use of relative clauses on
reading and writing skills.
Activity 2: With the question card, make
questions to your classmate, then exchange
cards. Use relative clauses.
Relative Clause (review)
The students are smart.
They are learning relative clause.

The students who are learning relative clause are smart.

who is used instead of they


Relative Clause
Try to connect the sentences by using
relative clauses.
e.g. The girls annoyed me. They talked too
much.

The girls who talked too much annoyed me.


Relative Clause
1. The man told me to come back today. He left
yesterday.
The man who left yesterday told me to come back today.

2. The cute boy is the owners son. He works in


the shop.
The cute boy who works in the shop is the owners son.

3. The ladder began to slip. I was standing on


it.The ladder which I was standing on began to slip. /
The ladder on which I was standing began to slip. (more
formal)
The watch is mine. You saw the watch in the
drawer.
The watch which (that) you saw in the drawer is mine.

The girl is my cousin. She knows how to sing.

The girl who (that) knows how to sing is my cousin.


The park is beautiful. The park is next to our
school.
The park which (that) is next to our school is
beautiful.
The dictionary is useful. I bought the
dictionary yesterday.
The dictionary which (that) I bought yesterday is
useful.
The problem is difficult to solve. We are facing
the problem.
The problem which (that) we are facing is difficult to
solve.

What is a phrasal verb?
Its a verb which is most commonly used by English
speakers.
Its a verb + a particle like ALONG, AWAY, BACK,
OUT, UP, ETC.

Not necessarily means the same as the verb which is


part of a phrasal one.
Example
WORK and WORK OUT
Phrasal Verbs
SETTLE DOWN : to adopt an orderly and routine way of
life, take up a permanent post, etc, after marriage
BREAK UP:
to end a romantic relationship with someone.
GO OUT: when two people date in a romantic

way.
TURN OUT: Somehow to end in a particular

way, such as well, badly, all right. Etc.

to create a phrasal verb.
Read these opinions about relationships. Complete
the sentences with the phrasal verbs below.

Apply expressions to soften comments

Your neighbors are unfriendly and they think they are better that everybody
else.
Your neighbors dont like you have parties. They always put problems for that.

are always watching what you do in your house.
Your neighbor upstairs plays drums at 2 am everyday.
One of your neighbors is always coming to your house. You dont want him
there anymore.
Your best friend is cheating his girlfriend and you dont like to know about it.
Your teacher was wrong on your mark but you are too afraid to tell him.
Your girlfriend has new hair color and you dont like it.
