1. INCONSISTENCY

Do not
be inconsistent
Teachers make the unforgiving mistake of
being extremely inconsistent and its
difficult to manage a classroom.

Like for instance: New

teachers in their classroom
begin doing something in
their first class the very first
time they teach, but by theBeware inconsistency because:
time the next class arrives It causes resentment
or several classes after, Learning will suffer
Behaviors will worsen
everything is completely You'll be forever frustrated
different.
Instead:
Before school starts, talk with your
grade level and content teammates.
Inquire:
What are the classroom
expectations and procedures?
What routines do they establish the
first week of school?
How do they start and end their
lessons?

Once you determined some

strategies for managing, be
sure to practice them early
on/with your students and
use them consistently.
2. FOCUSING ON LESSON Yes, it is extremely important
PLAN RATHER THAN to have a lesson plan
equipped and ready to go.
STUDENT LEARNING However, lesson planning
isn't all to the teaching career.
Now, a lesson plan is something we are ALL familiar with.
As beneficial a lesson plan may be towards us teachers, it
could be quite a problem Dont ya think?

Listen to this teacher and her lesson plan

problem:
My first year of teaching, I was desperate to keep
my students busy. Prepared with work sheets on
every topic, I'd lead 10 minutes of grammar
instruction, followed by vocabulary work, then a class
novel, and so on. This practice may have passed the
time, but my lesson plans lacked purpose.
Instead :
Structure your class using
essential standards, clearly
stating the goal of each
lesson, modeling tasks, and
allowing time for students to
practice.
Avoid worrying about
what your students will
do in class, and think,
"What do my kids need
Tea
ch1 to learn?"

Then they know what they are

learning, and you have
evidence of their
understanding.
3. AVOIDING PARENT
CONTACT

A teachers story: As a beginning

teacher, I was uncomfortable
calling parents. I was closer in age
to the teens in my room than the
adults on the line, and felt like a
tattling child as I stammered out
my reason for calling.

As new teachers, we are faced with the reality of facing

PARENTS. Yes, the rowdy, the smart mouths, yet the calm
conservatives. However, this can frighten some first-year
teachers especially when they suffer in communication skills
and dealing with others. This could result in avoiding of the
parents, which should NOT be done. And it is okay to be
closer in age to your students, you are a first year teacher.
What to do :
Do not be afraid! and when you call
or speak face to face with parents,
make sure you are calm and able to
speak with a positive tone.
Describe the strategies you've tried in class,
and ask for suggestions
Be clear that you are all on the same side,
working in the child's best interest.
Have consistent parent
contact, it builds your credibility
Tea and makes further interactions

Having a parent teacher

relationship is important. It
contributes to the childs
school success and child is
the number one priority.
. NOT SETTING BOUNDARIES
WITH STUDENTS

Sometimes, new teachers fail to remember that they are

well.. teachers.
New Teachers befriend their students portraying this
cool character to maintain the approval of their
students. Hey wassup dawg!? instead of a Hello
Lydia how are you today? especially because they
are young.
Sometimes, when the teacher is new and of a
younger age, they tend to set no boundaries between
them and their student. The student sees the teacher
as a friend, best friend and even their confidante,
when all they are supposed to be is.. their teacher.
In this case, it is important to remain professional.
When a child drops by to see you, keep your door
open.
If they discuss personal information, such
as feelings of depression or problems at
home, contact a guidance counselor.
Your interactions with students, in
person or via email, should not be
secret.
Troubled kids may want you to be
Tea their friend, but you need to be a
c h1
01 responsible adult.

We love our students and know the

value of getting to know each one
as individuals. However, you need
to set some boundaries in the
teacher-student relationship,
beyond just setting your
Instagram account to private. As
the cool, young teacher, students
may feel more comfortable around
5. BEING AFRAID TO ASK
FOR HELP
Dont be afraid. As a new first-year
teacher, asking for help is okay! New
teachers tend to make the sad choice of
struggling in asking for advice and help
when the help is available.

New teachers must know that asking for help

doesn't mean you're a bad teacher. Rather, it's a
sign that you're being proactive and have a
willingness to improve.
DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP, INSTEAD:
Seek advice from
teammates, mentors, or
administrators and be
specific and solution-
oriented.
Even seek assistance in virtual
communities. Participate in educational
Twitter chats, or join online teaching
forums and post a question.

is tempting to hide in

6. BURNING OUT
Teacher burnout is most often a problem and it is insidious
because it can remove dedicated teachers from the field of
education, sometimes even before they physically leave their
jobs!
___________________________________________________

As a student sitting in education classes, you

never underestimate the teaching field, until
you do it.

Teaching is quite a hectic job that tends to

overwhelm one, burning you out completely. As
new teachers, they arent used to such things
and all hell breaks loose!
Whew! Being a teacher is tiring! but:
Learn to set limits for yourself
and prioritize your well-being.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by
your to-do list, schedule some fun!
o Add a book club meeting, workout,
dinner date, or even a few extra hours
of sleep to your calendar. Whatever it is
you do for fun..

Just remember to take care of

yourself, physically and mentally.

Teaching requires a
lot of time and
energy. But dont
lose yourself, smile,
laugh and overly
enjoy the teaching
7. FORGETTING THE
JOYS OF TEACHING
The difficult realities
of teaching hit hard
in your first few
years:
- Standardized
testing
- Paperwork
- extracurricular
duties, etc.
It can be
overwhelming and as
new teachers, we
forget the whole
concept of
Did you forget?
When teaching becomes
too overwhelming, learn to
focus on the positive
experiences. It can help
you power through tough
days!
Remember this is the career path you
chose!
Think of the real reason why you
Tea chose education and hold it close to
ch 101 your heart.

Teachers, dont forget

about the joys of our
career- We are special
and what we do truly
matters, and we make all
the difference!
