1.Background of Gondar University

University Of Gondar is one of the Universities in Ethiopia having more than 60 years
of age.
But for along time the main core processes i.e.
teaching and Learning,
Community service and
research processes were not supported by automated ICT systems.
 1.1 ICT Data Center

It was established by Ministry of Education in 2005 and controlled by one

instructor from bioinformatics department.
Some of the teams in UoG data center are:
Software development team
Technical Support and maintenance
Teaching and Learning Technology(Training and Advisory)
Video conference
E-learning
System administration team
Ip phone
Active directory and email service
Network and Infrastructure

2. OVER All INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

2.1 HOW WE GET INTO THE COMPANY

There were two options that were given to us in order to get an internship hosting
company
The first one is finding the internship hosting company by our self and the second one
is through university of Gondar, UIL office arrangement. We get into our internship
hosting company through the opportunity by using the first option.
During the first day of our internship our supervisor Mr. Gezahegn Demas gave for us
enough orientation about the company and he give achance for us to choose one of the
following
Software Development Team;
Network and Infrastructure Team;
Video Conference & Smart Classroom Section;
Training and Advisory;
Maintenance Team;
2.2. The section of the company we have been working

During the first month internship period we have seen overview of hardware
components of network in the data center, university of Gondar Aste Tewodros campus
network architecture, security camera control room and video conference and (smart
class room). While in the second month we have been doing network installation.

Tasks we have been executing

Visiting data center room and whole network architecture

Visiting security camera control room
Visiting video conference and smart class room
View indoor and outdoor wireless access points
Network cable crimping and identifying network cable type
Configure switches and create VLAN
Configure router
Install wireless network
Test a fiber lost using OTDR machine
Connect the lost fiber using splice machine
 Analyze each network hardware equipments in data center
Identified the three layer Campus hierarchical network model
Analyze Cisco switch command
Configuration of distribution layer switch
Configuration of access layer switch
2.4.How good we have been in performing our work tasks
When we was fourth year student we was learning computer network we and
computer network II so this networking practical and theoretical training makes
my internship tasks very easy in the company.
we can say we am good at everything for the overall internship period because
we can do any task that given by my supervisor and we finish my project in the
scheduled time.
 some of the challenges are as follows:-
since we have seen for the first time the UoG data center was very complex for us and
we cannot understood easily.
We were new how to configure cisco switch commands
When we need some help from ICT team members they were busy .
 The first solution we take to our company are we decide to stick myself with the ICT
team members and only to focus on their daily activities.
To solve their problem we tried see video tutorials and ask some teachers how to build
multimedia database system in PHP or other programming language
In the company there were electrical engineering students from our compass and we
began asking them to be with their group to visit on communication devices and other
related tasks in the company together.

4.1.Conclusion
we concluded that the program is very good to know the real world life and work way
comparing with class study subjects.
During the duration of internship period we have seen the real working conditions,
leaderships, management systems and their interaction as well as the weakness of the
company.
it is the way to upgrade the theoretical knowledge into practical skill
Creates a springboard from college life to career life
Strengthens background in field of choice
Provides a "real life" experience with a short term commitment
 We strongly recommend that the university should use licensed antivirus.
The data center should be protected in building grounding and lightning protection
system.
Cable Management: All data cabling should be under the floor, both ends of the cable
should be labeled and tagged for proper identification.
Training program should be started for both academic and administrator staff.
