The Caribbean Sea was of great interest to many European powers in the 16th Century. The Spanish first came
and Spain claimed the larger islands in the region. The British, Dutch, Danish, and French later came in
search of territories and treasure, and also staked their claims to the smaller islands in the Caribbean sea .

We will explore old fortresses that once guarded entry to these islands. Fortresses, that may have determined the islands destiny
and resulting history. The history, heritage and fortunes of the of islands in the region have been shaped by the forts that still stand
sentinel to this day on the high places of many Caribbean cities. From larger territories like Trinidad in the south to Jamaica in the
north, and smaller territories like Antigua Barbuda and St. Martin located in the Eastern Caribbean, fortresses built by European
powers to guard their possessions still remain as a powerful reminder of the part they played in helping to shape the history of
European prowess in the region. View the Pirate video trailer to see scenes from pirates of the Caribbean.

Cruise ships normally fy the fag of the countrys port in which they enter. Ships sailing into the waters of the
Caribbean in the past few their nations fags to identify themselves, and gain safe passage into port.
However, some ships that few a friendly fag were in fact enemy ships, who opened fire, and invaded the ports
in some instances. Many islands changed hands because of this. For example Trinidad and Jamaica were
settled by the Spanish, and were subsequently invaded by the British. Antigua was invaded by the French and
St. Martin island is shared between the Dutch and the French.

Fort San Andres is the last surviving fortification from when the Spanish ruled the southern Caribbean Sea.
Spanish exploration of Trinidad began in 1498, when Christopher Columbus stopped there on his third voyage
and came to an end in 1797 with the capture of the island by the British. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish,
the island of Trinidad was called Kairi, and was inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Carib people.
Descendants of the indigenous people still live in a Carib Community in Arima on the island. Click on the

Fort James stands at the north westerly end of St. Johns Harbour, and the guns, now silent, still stand guard. The
construction of old fort began in 1675, but the newer section of the fort with the outer enclosure wall began in 1706,
and most of the buildings were completed in 1739. The fort was built because of fear of invasion by the French, who had
captured the island in 1652. In 1773, at the height of its dominance over the harbour, 36 guns armed Fort James, and
the barracks accommodated 75 men. In the 19th century, a gun fired saluted visiting warships. A signal station also
signaled passing ships at sunrise and at sunset and still signals visiting ships today.

Each planter was required to supply slaves to help build Fort James,. The construction of the fort was
stimulated by the war of Spanish succession in Europe and the threat of invading French privateers. Much of
the fort was damaged by various earthquakes and hurricanes, and stands in ruins. Presently, there are plans to
restore the fort, which is now home to many beach restaurants and tourist shops. Like many other forts, this

Welcome to the island of Saint Martin which lies north of Antigua Barbuda (French: Saint-Martin; Dutch: Sint Maarten) in
the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km (190 mi) east of Puerto Rico. The 87-square-kilometre (34 sq mi) island is
divided roughly 60/40 between the French Republic (53 km2, 20 sq mi)[1] and the Kingdom of the Netherlands (34 km2,
13 sq mi);[2] but the two parts are roughly equal in population, with slightly more people living on the Dutch side. It is the
smallest inhabited island divided between two nations. The division dates to 1648. The main cities arePhilipsburg(Dutch

Port Royal was founded by the Spanish in 1518 and was once the largest port city in the Caribbean. The town of Port Royal
was the den of privateers who were encouraged to attack Spanish vessels laden with new world treasures. The port city
was by far the most notorious city for its display of the gaudy wealth of British and Dutch sponsored privateers and their
loose morals. In 1692, an earthquake with an accompanying tsunami destroyed much of the fortifications, and this
occurred again in 1907. The fort has also been regularly damaged by sever hurricanes. During the invasion of Jamaica in
1655 by the British, Port Royal was captured and remained under British rule.

The entrance to Port Royal still stands tall, but the port is a shadow of its former glory when privateers sailed
triumphantly into its harbour with booty from pillaged ships. Plans for developing as a cruise ship destination were
abandoned in the 1960s and a plan for a 17 th century theme attraction area that refects the citys heritage is being
established. Today, Port Royal is best known to post-medieval archaeologists as the "City that Sank". Robert Marx
considers it the most important underwater archaeological site in the western hemisphere, yielding 16thand-17th-
century artifacts and many important treasures from indigenous peoples predating its founding.
