Garment vocabulary

and classification
Tops and T-shirts
Fit and Shape : Varies from body comforting fit achieved with
stretch fabric, seaming or darts to dart less and oversized.

Hang from Body: Hangs from shoulder or from above the bust.

Length: Varies from cropped to waist length to hip length to tunic or


dress length.

Sleeves: Varies from long or short to cap-sleeved to sleeveless,


sleeve cap may be smooth, pleated or softly gathered.

Armscye: Varies from traditional armhole to extended shoulder, to


halter style to raglan to kimono.

Neckline: Includes a full range of necklines from jewel to bateau to


V-neck and others.
Sweaters
Fit and Shape : Varies from body conforming ( spandex in yarn,
shaped at side seam, knit in darts) to oversized.

Hang from Body: Typically hangs from the shoulders, but off the
shoulder or strapless styles may hang from above the bust.

Pullover or Cardigan: may be design to be pulled over the


head or to open down the front.

Length: Varies from cropped at waist to elongated tunic or dress.

Sleeves: Varies from long or short sleeves to cap sleeved to


sleeveless.
Armscye : Varies from traditional armhole to extended shoulder to
raglan to dropped armhole to kimono.

Neckline : Includes a full range of necklines from turtleneck or


mock turtle to cowl, jewel and bateau or V-neck.
Shirts and Blouses
Fit and Shape : Varies from straight and oversized to semi fitted
with darts, a side front seam, or princess seams.

Hang from Body: From the shoulder, a drop shoulder, or a yoke.

Closure: Traditionally opens down the centre front. Blouses may be


pulled over the head with a front or back keyhole opening or button
down the back, across one shoulder, or asymmetrically down the front.
Length: Varies from the high hip level if meant to be worn out, 6 to
8 inches below the waist when tucked in, or to the thigh for an oversized
look.
Sleeves: Shirt generally feature a minimal cap and an extended
shoulder seam. Blouses may be sleeveless or with sleeves; sleeves vary
from set in to shirt sleeves to raglan to kimono; sleeve cap may be
smooth,
Armscye gathered or pleated.
: Most shirt feature a dropped armhole and extended
shoulder that allows the sleeve to be sewn in prior to the side seam
joining. Armholes on blouses match the sleeve type.
Neckline : Round necks with band, shirt or convertible collar.
Blouses may be designed with a full range of necklines and collars.
Jackets and Vest
Fit and Shape : Varies from boxy silhouette with no shaping
devices to a fit achieved through centre back and side seams, darts,
princess seams and/or side panels.
Hang from Body: Generally hangs from the shoulder, although
the location of the shoulder seam may vary.

Length: Varies from cropped to knee length to floor length evening

Sleeves: Traditionally long, but three quarter length or short sleeve
