CONTEMPORARY RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS We will discuss this with reference to 5 areas
Effects of different Technologies
Commercialisation of outdoor environments and experiences Portrayals of outdoor environments and experiences in the media, music, art, writing and advertising Social responses to risk taking Social and political discourses about climate change, water management, biosecurity etc. The effects of different technologies
Ongoing technological advancements
continue to influence all aspects of society Technologies function is to make life easier Innovations have changed the way in which we experience outdoor environments: Materials and clothing Communications and navigation Information technology Activity specific equipment Safety equipment Access - Innovations allow us to access outdoor venues that would otherwise be to difficult to reach without technological assistance. Participation and Safety Allow us to participate in a wide range of environmental conditions despite the time or climatic variation, or season, of the year. Examples pg. 188, Nelson Outdoor Environmental Studies Diving advancement http://www.leisurepro.com/blog/scuba-gu ides/evolution-modern-scuba-gear-ages / Whilst technology can improve our experiences, it can have an undesirable effect. Creating artificial environments means people dont need to leave indoors to experience an activity eg. Wave pool at MSAC, surfing, indoor rock climbing, detracting from the experience the environment has to offer. What does the environment have to offer? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI2c LDEzNUo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUDU 5jhT0Ls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLQ1 hPI97s8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_PD A0oqaFc Discussion Is this a good experience? What dont you experience whilst doing these activities? Is it safer? Would you rather do these or into the environment? What are the positives for the indoor recreation? Relationships with outdoor environments
Have one example of Perceptions,
Interactions and Impacts for each of the following: Influence of technology Alienation pg. 189, Nelson Outdoor and Environmental Studies Easier to participate with technology pg. 189- 190. Technology makes it safer pg. 191 Technology improves our performance pg. 192 Technology gives us better access pg. 192 Commercialisation of Outdoor environments and experiences
Commercialisation the process of bringing a product
into the market. Environment can be used to sell adventure experiences. People are wanting to pay companies or other people to provide them with outdoor recreational activities Paying people to do the organising for you. Equipment, transport, safety measure, knowledge etc. Gives people greater access to outdoor experiences. Costs will exclude those who cant afford the price-tag companies have for experiences. Operators can choose to educate sustainable participation whilst still providing an experience. If the company is focused solely on making money, the environment may be neglected.
