Situations of ethical dilemma for the cook in the
parable the master cook
Desire
In the parable The Master Cook the ethical dilemma faced by the
cook is between expertise and wish(desire)
the master cook was expertise in the art of ceremony but he begin
fostering a feeling that the art of sword is better than the art of tea-
ceremony especially in achieving fame and recognition
he ignored his own inbuilt qualities of being a good cook and gave
preference to the art of sword
he decided to learn the art of Sword in privacy though he was not
permitted as he didnt belong to Samurai Community
the cook violated the values and principles of the system of
monastery of martial arts training, and deviated from the code of
conduct of the cook
the cook contradicted the historical principles of learning from a
he did the most unethical doing by violating the trust of Master
Samurai.
Later he learned and grasped the techniques of the Sword and could
easily manage and settle the opponent to ground
but due to incapacity of the analytical engines of his mind he
justified himself and begin representing himself as Samurai and
unknowingly by fault challenged Shozen a master swordsman and
eventually reached the verge of death
but lastly his expertise saved his life as Shogan accepted his cup of
tea and spared his life.
The ethical dilemma for the cook in the whole story was
that he was not aware and didnt know what to pursue.
He was a great cook but desired to be Samurai. He felt
being a Samurai he will seek reputation and recognition
and in pursuit of it he gave all his effort. Kyozan made
him realize his strength that was cooking.
