Football Clubs in the UK

Argumentation

I have chosen to write about football because I find it
fascinating, simple and at the same time complicated, addictive and
extremely influential in our century. I am fully overwhelmed at how it
started by being a sport of the poor and it has now become the sport
which attracts the most money in the world of sports. Although along the
century it has started to be referred to as more of a business
than a sport I still think sportsmanship, fair play and the love for the
game itself prevail over the love for the money.
These are the reasons my work deals with what football
used to be before it was a money-making machine and why I still fully
convinced that it is not money that makes the ball go round but it is
passion.

The first chapter of this work deals with the way and the
time football appeared. Some people may be extremely
surprised to find out that football was not a creation of the
British inhabitants. It actually has been around for more than we
could believe: since the 5th century BC. People in Ancient Greece
and Rome also played football, or at least a form of it.

Chapter 1.3 presents the way in which football came closer

to what we know today. The most significant moment of the 19th
century was the foundation of Football Association, or the FA.
Football gained popularity and the first international football
match was played between England and Scotland in Patrick in
November 1872, ending in a disappointing 0-0.

I continued my work with a chapter on womens

football, which definitely is not something new and modern as
most people believe. Remarkably, womens football has been
around since the inception of the sport in the late 19th century,
and there is evidence of female involvement in all the
forerunners of the game as well as medieval football. Although not
as popular with spectators today, it was actually extremely popular
during World War I.
Chapter two deals with modern foot
ball.
Chapter 2.1 is dedicated to the F.A. sinc
e it is such an important institution. It cont
rols every aspect of the organized game and
it is responsible for all national com
petitions. The F.A grew rapidly in the 20th
century and tried to set rules not only on the
field but also outside it, in transfers and fees
but it did not have much success there.
Chapter three is the one which deals exte
nsively with the four teams that have traditionally bee
n the big dogs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Ma
nchester. The four sections of this chapter bring infor
mation about the clubs history, the way each of the
m was founded, the rivalries between them and the co
nflicts between their fans and also about famous pla
yers or coaches. Some names are too old to be re
membered while others, like Ronaldo, Thierry He
nry or Sir Alex Ferguson, are familiar to almost ev
ery person in the modern world.
The final chapter of my work turns to the influence of medi
a on football. It presents the way this old sport has become a money
making machine. Transfers are made on millions of Euros, matches
are broadcast and advertising during them cost more than people co
uld ever imagine, club owners are billionaires and business people w
ho put money first but at the same time are passioned about the gam
e. Although the involvement of money in the top leagues or internati
onal leagues could be criticised, money became an importa
nt factor which is expected to result in success bringing attention
of more people. The attention means more people coming, which eq
uals to more money again. More finance allows the club to sign new
contracts with better quality players. Another cash flows from reve
nues and advertisements. It is a circle.
