Jupiter, woodcut from a 1550 edition ofGuido Bonatti'sLiber Astronomiae
The planet Jupiter has been known since ancient times. It is visible to the naked eye in the night sky and can
occasionally be seen in the daytime when the Sun is low.[138] To theBabylonians, this object represented their
godMarduk. They used Jupiter's roughly 12-year orbit along theeclipticto define theconstellationsof their
zodiac.[23][139]
The Romans named it afterJupiter(Latin:Iuppiter, Ipiter) (also called Jove), the principalgodof
Roman mythology, whose name comes from theProto-Indo-Europeanvocativecompound *Dyu-
pter(nominative: *Dyus-ptr, meaning "O Father Sky-God", or "O Father Day-God"). [140] In turn, Jupiter was
the counterpart to themythical GreekZeus(), also referred to asDias(), the planetary name of which
is retained in modernGreek.[141]
Theastronomical symbolfor the planet,, is a stylized representation of the god's lightning bolt. The original
Greek deityZeussupplies the rootzeno-, used to form some Jupiter-related words, such aszenographic.[142]
Jovianis theadjectivalform of Jupiter. The older adjectival formjovial, employed by astrologers in the
Middle Ages, has come to mean "happy" or "merry," moods ascribed toJupiter's astrological influence.[143]
The Chinese, Korean and Japanese referred to the planet as the "wood star" (Chinese:;pinyin:mxng),
based on the ChineseFive Elements.[144][145][146] Chinese Taoism personified it as theFu star. The Greeks called it
,Phaethon, "blazing." InVedic astrology, Hindu astrologers named the planet afterBrihaspati, the
religious teacher of the gods, and often called it "Guru", which literally means the "Heavy One."[147]
In the English language, Thursday is derived from "Thor's day", withThorinGermanic mythologybeing the
equivalent Germanic god to the Roman godJupiter (mythology). The Roman day Jovis was renamed Thursday. [148]
In theCentral Asian-Turkic myths, Jupiter called as a "Erendiz/Erentz", which means "eren(?)+yultuz(star)".
There are many theories about meaning of "eren". Also, these peoples calculated the period of the orbit of Jupiter
as 11 years and 300 days. They believed that some social and natural events connected to Erentz's movements
on the sky.[149]
