 Steps to analysing
poetry
1. Read (more than once!) and get a basic
understanding of the poem.

2. Use a highlighter for images.

3. Circle words with strong connotations (hidden Innocent

suggested meanings). tongues

4. Underline sounds. Gargle

5. Determine if there are any shifts in mood by

drawing arrows (up and down) and write an
adjective to describe the mood.
6. Make sure you label techniques (similes, metaphors
