HYPOTHYROIDISM

Aaron Ventresca
WHAT IS HYPOTHYROIDISM?

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the

thyroid does not make a significant amount of
thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).
The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland
located in the front of your neck.
T3 and T4 hormones regulate metabolic
processes, body temperatures, heart rate, and
protein production.
T3 AND T4
Thyroxine(thyroid chemical)
is named T4 as it is made up
of four iodine atoms.
T3 is an abbreviated name
for triiodothyronine.
T3 is technically T4 that is
converted into a purer and
more useful form in the liver
and the brain brain. During
this process, one of the four
iodine atoms is lost, creating
T3.

ACQUISITION OF
HYPOTHYROIDISM
Hypothyroidism can be acquired at birth, or can be acquired throughout
life.
People of any age are able to acquire hypothyroidism.
Older adults are more susceptible to hypothyroidism as a result of increased
stress, poor eating, and life changes.
Women age 60 and older have the highest risk.
Hypothyroidism is passed genetically, though few people are born with it.
PASSAGE OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism is not contagious, and is not spread person-to-person.

Hypothyroidism can sometimes be acquired via other conditions, In most cases, Hypothyroidism results from excessive stress, poor eating,
including: or lifestyle diseases.

Though hypothyroidism is not fatal by itself, it can cause fatal diseases

including myxedema, heart disease, and comas.
TREATMENT
Almost always, treatment for hypothyroidism involves daily dosage of the
synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine.
Medications: Levothroid, Synthroid
Oral medication balances thyroid hormone levels, curing effects and
symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Thyroid medication gradually lowers cholesterol levels and can reverse
excessive weight gain.
The usage of synthetic hormones is often life long.
Dosages can change year-to-year based on doctor recommendations.
SYNTHROID
UNIQUE FACTS
Over 27 million Americans have some type of thyroid ailment. About half of them
do not know they suffer from thyroid illness.
Women are more susceptible to hypothyroidism than men.
Thyroid disease becomes more common as age increases.
The human thyroid produces three essential chemicals:thyroxine (T4),
triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin.
Global populations with iodine deficient soil suffer from thyroidism more so than
other populations.
