Purpose The original purpose of Woodstock was to raise enough money to build a recording studio. This purpose was not met, as the three day music festival ended up with significant financial losses. Woodstock was a contrast to the violent protests and bombings of anti-war groups, like the SDS and Weathermen Many people reported that their only purpose in attending was simply to listen to the music. Background Woodstock was 3 day music festival in August of 1969 held in Bethel, New York. The festival was held in a 600 acre alfalfa field owned by Max Yasgur.
