OtherExtraterrestrialBasaltsI
Basalticachondritemeteoriteshavecompositions,textures,
andmineralogiesthatarebroadlysimilartoterrestrialbasalts.
EucritesandHowarditesallhaveancientcrystallizationages
of~4.6Ga.AgainverydifferentfromEarthandtheMoon.
Oxygenisotopicratiosaredistinctfromterrestrialrocks,thus
theyarederivedfromadifferentregioninthesolarsystem.
AchondritesarederivedfromEucriteParentBody,which
musthavehadamantledominatedbyolivineandpyroxene
depletedinalkalisandvolatilesandahighFe/Mg.Melting
occurredinthepresenceofplagioclase,sothebodymustbe
smalltohavelowPathighT!
AsteroidVesta(540kmdiameter)isacandidatefortheEPB
asitssurfaceiscoveredinbasalt,butthisisjustspeculation.
