WIKIS
• 1 What is a wiki?
• A wiki (the word is Hawaiian for ‘quick’!) is a
series of web pages on the Internet that can
be immediately and easily edited by anyone
with a password to your wiki. They are
collaborative spaces online where you can
share and create information among a
number of users.

WIKIS
• The content of a wiki depends on you, and
what your learners/trainees would like to
write in it. A wiki usually can consist of text,
and photos, videos and other applications
such as a chat room.

WIKIS
• Wikis are conceived as a ‘tool for
collaborative writing/editing’, so ideally wiki
tasks should include some degree of
‘collaboration’, in pairs, groups, whole class,
etc.
Ideas for Collaborative Writing Using
Wikis
• book reports: students write a book report
collaboratively or individually to a book report
wiki.
• poetry: students compose poems together.
• short stories: students collaboratively write
and develop a short story.
• letters to the editor: students write letters to
the ‘editor’ on a current issue assigned by the
teacher.
WIKIS
There are some wikis which do not require a password,
and are open to the general public, such as
wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org ). However, the
software that we recommend for setting up your wiki
(called PBworks formerly known as PBWiki) does
require users to have a password to edit the wiki – this
will protect your learners’ privacy. You can make your
wiki public, but most people keep their wikis private,
to share only with specific groups of people.

PBworks
2 Getting started: Setting up your wiki
There are several different sites offering free wiki services, but one of the easiest
to use is PBworks (please note this software used to be called PBwiki– PB " stood
for "peanut butter," as in "as easy to create as a peanut butter sandwich." In the
spring of 2009 this was changed to PBworks to reflect the workspaces
environment this software provides. These wikis are still easy to create, but the
focus is also on working more efficiently.)
In this tutorial we explore the basic functions of PBworks. Note that we do not
cover all the functions, simply those that you need to successfully set up the
basics.
