Throughout the novel, the characters of black color are subjected to cruel and degrading treatment, lack of proper
education, unfair pay/job opportunities and are forced to settle with the unfulfilling lives they live. The service that
Race Equality Foundation provides would tremendously benefit the community of Jackson, Mississippi as they work
towards providing all races with the rights they deserve and creating positive change in communities like Jackson.
Women's Rights
Its all about putting yourself in a man-meeting situation. (66)

Every female character in the novel faces sexism in their everyday life, from being held back from living a life full of
opportunity due to their sex. A woman's value is measured by her beauty and ability to marry well. It is believed in
society for women to be solely responsible of managing themselves, their household and their help. The service that
Working Group on Women, Peace and Security offers would help aid to the women in the novel struggling with
gender-equality. With their service, the women in the novel could have an opportunity to develop skills outside of
their homes and gain independence in their life.
Children's Educational Rights

Neither of my boys will be going to college. (294)

Most character of black colour in the novel are deprived of proper education. The characters
are removed from school at ages as young as thirteen in order to work and help provide for
their families. With the help of Unicef, the black youth in Jackson could have the opportunity
to receive a proper education, and develop skills outside of the work force.
Workplace Rights
Got to be the worst place in the world, inside a oven. You in

International Labour Organization is a NGO that focuses on setting labour standards, promoting social
justice and providing human and labour rights. The maids in this novel would benefit from the
services of this organization immensely as they face daily hardships due to their work environment.
With the help of ILO, the maids could receive fair pay, be treated rightfully and be protected from
unfair dismissal.
Protection of Women from Violation
I was trapped in the corner of the bedroom like a dog. He was beating
me with his belt. (486)
Throughout the novel, the character Minny is subjected to emotional but most specifically, physical abuse from her
husband Leroy. She is constantly afraid of speaking up when at home, as she knows the consequences she will face if
she does. Access to Sneha would greatly help Minny as she would have a safe environment to go to when in need, and
an escape from her abusive relationship with her husband. If Sneha was available to Minny, she could develop strength
and confidence to stand up for herself, and evolve into a strong-independant woman.
