Main Objective

Year round irrigation to 51,000 ha of land in Bardia and Banke district

Generate 48 MW of firm hydropower

How????
By diverting and transferring 40 m3/s water from a snow- fed water
surplus Bheri river to water deficit Babai river

Utilize the difference in elevation between Bheri and Babai (about

152 m) to generate hydro-electricity

Phases of Project:
First Phase : A 12-kilometer tunnel will be dug
Second Phase : A hydropower project with installed capacity of 48 MW
will be built.
Third Phase :Irrigation works will be completed

Cost of works :USD 100 million

Period of Activity :2015 2021 A.D

Environmental Considerations:

Need to maintain the allowable limit of minimum 30 cm water depth in

Bheri-river during April and May, i.e. fish migration period.
To ensure protection of aquatic life , long term changes in water
temperature should not exceed 2 degrees
To limit water depth variation of 0.3 m in Babai river to maintain the
aquatic life and mammals to cross the river in breeding period
Minimum average annual discharged in Bheri river = 76 m3/s
Design discharge = 40 m3/s ( 50% of minimum avg. annual discharge)

Benefit due to BBDMP

Total Annual Benefit

EIRR = 13.42%
B\C ratio = 1.36 at 10 % discount rate
