The dead load carried by a bridge member consists of its

own weight and the portions of the weight of the super
structure and any fixed loads supported by the member
IRC STANDARD LIVE LOADS

Live loads are those caused by vehicles which

pass over the bridge and are transient in nature.
There are four types of standard loadings
IRC class AA loading
IRC class 70R loading
IRC class A loading
IRC class B loading
IRC class AA loading

This load consists

Tracked vehicle of 700 KN or
Wheeled vehicle of 400 KN
IRC class 70R loading

This load consists

Tracked vehicle of 700 KN or
Wheeled vehicle of total load of 1000 KN
IRC class A or B loading

Class A loading consists of a wheel load train

composed of a driving vehicle and trailers of
specified axle spacing and loads ,as shown in
fig
class B loading comprises of a wheel
load train similar to that of class A loading
but with smaller axle loads
Impact effect
The impact allowance is expressed as a fraction or
percentage of the applied live load.
For IRC class AA or 70R loading
1 for spans less than 9 m
a) for tracked vehicle - 25% for spans up to 5 m
linearly reducing to 10% for spans of 9 m
b) for wheeled vehicle - 25%
2 for spans of 9 m and above
a) for tracked vehicle - for rc bridges ,10% up to span
of 40 m and in accordance with the curve for spans
exceeding 40 m.
For steel bridges,10% for all spans
b) for wheeled vehicle -for RC bridges ,25% for spans
up to 12 m and in accordance with the curve for spans
exceeding 12 m.
for steel bridges ,25% for spans up to 23 m, and as in
fig for spans exceeding 23 m
For IRC class A or B loading

For reinforced concrete bridges

4.5/(6+L)
For steel bridges
9/(13.5+L)
Alternatively,the impact factor fraction may
be determined from the curves
