Identify the purpose of the results section in a
report.
Analyse a report example and identify its
components.
Classify words / phrases according to what they
express: sequency, quantity, quantity or causality.
Write their own sentences to be considered in the
report section using the language learned.
REPORT WRITING

What have we
done so far?
Important

You have to upload the methodology section

and results to Turnitin on Friday June 2nd.

Methodology: 350 to 500 words

Results: 150 to 200 words.

What is the purpose of the Results section?

Its purpose is to report

your comments on what

you found or observed.

You can use :

graphs tables

equations
pictures
We write a Results section because

1. Some results might be more interesting than

others.
2. We need to relate the results to the aim(s) of the
research.
3. You may want to offer background information
to explain why a particular result occured, or to
compare results with those of researchers.
4. The most important thing is that YOU must
communicate your own understanding and
interpretation of the results to your reader.
Read the following RESULTS section.

The title of the paper is:

A modelling approach to traffic management

and CO exposure during peak hours.

Think of the grammar

use.
In which paragraph, the writer:
Presents possible problems with results. 3
Invitates to view results
Provides specific / key results in detail, with or without
explanations.
Makes comparisons with results in other research.
2
Makes comparisons with model predictions

Possible implications of results. 4

Revisits the research aim / existing research.
Revisits / Expands Methodology. 1
Gives a general overview of results.
RESULTS section has four main
components.

Revisiting the research aim / existing research.

1. Revisiting / Expanding Methodology.
General overview of results.
Invitation to view results
Specific / key results in detail, with or without
2. explanations.
Comparisons with results in other research.
Comparisons with model predictions
3 Possible problems with results.
4 Possible implications of results.
GRAMMAR FOR WRITING RESULTS

SEQUENCE FREQUENCY

QUANTITY CAUSALITY
To indicate the relationships or connections
SEQUENCE between the events that you observed. For
example, one event was caused by other.

to be able to describe the order and time

FREQUENCY sequence of what you did and found in a
precise way.

To let the reader know the what the numbers

QUANTITY or quantities mean in order to understand
them.

To show how often a particular event or results

occurred. If an event occurred on every
CAUSALITY occasion a test was carried out; then it is a
very reliable result .
With your partners, match the
words/phrases to the right category.

VOCABULARY

REVISITING THE RESEARCH AIM / EXISTING RESEARCH

In this work, we sought to establish a methodology for the

synthesis of a benzoxazine.

Since the angular alignment is critical, the effect of an error in

orientation was investigated experimentally.

The main purpose of this work was to test algorithm

performance.
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF RESULTS
It is apparent that both films exhibit typical
mesoporous structures.

In general, coefficients for months close to the mean

flowering data were negative.

Levels of weight loss were similar in all cases.

It is evident that these results are in good agreement

with their FE counterparts.
INVITATION TO VIEW RESULTS
Figure 3 illustrates the findings of the spatial time
activity.

Comparing Figs. 1 and 4 shows that volumetric

strains developed after pore pressure had dissipated.

The stress data in Fig. 18 indicate a more reasonable

relationship.

The overall volume changes are reported in Fig. 6.

SPECIFIC / KEY RESULTS IN DETAIL

There was a lower proportion of large particles present

at lower pH.

It eventually levelled off at terminal velocity of 300 m/s.

This kind of delamination did not occur anywhere else.

As can be seen, the higher injection rate gave

satisfactory results from all three methods.
COMPARISON WITH OTHER STUDIES

Distributions are almost identical in both cases.

Our concordance scores strongly confirm previous

predictions.

This is consistent with results obtained in

These results demonstrate that improved correlation

with the experimental results was achieved using the
new mesh.
PROBLEMS WITH RESULTS

It should, however, be noted that in FE methods , the

degree of mesh refinement may affect the results.

It is difficult to simulate the behaviour of the joints

realistically

Nevertheless, this effect is only local.

Although this was not obtained experimentally, it can be

assumed to exist.
POSSIBLE IMPLICATIONS OF RESULTS

This suggests that silicon is intrinsically involved in the

precipitation mechanism.
It could be inferred therefore that these may have reacted
with ozone to form organic acid such as formic acid.
This indicates that no significant crystalline transformations
occurred during sintering.
The results seem to indicate that this causes the behaviour to
become extremely volatile.
Complete the following ideas:
1. In order to we examined
2. To investigate ., we needed to
3. It is evident from the results that
4. As anticipated
5. Consistent with
6. Figure 1 illustrates
7. In the majority of .
8. It is difficult to
9. Future work should
10. Dramatic
11. is associated with
12. It could be inferred
