ITS DEFINE AS :-

The resistance to vertical forces of mastication, occlusal forces &

other forces applied in a direction towards the denture bearing
area.

When the natural teeth are missing ,the alveolar ridge & their covering of
mucosal tissue become the supporting elements.

Unfortunately , they were never meant to endure the forces of mastication &
other constant occlusal pressure that result from swallowing , clenching ,or
bruxing.

To make the best of bad situation , it is necessary to enhance the available

support by utilizing maximum coverageof all usable ridge bearing areas.
Areas of support are divided into:-
A.) Primary support area:- Area of edentulous ridge that are at
right angle to occlusal forces & usually do not resorb easily .

I) Posterior Ridge
MAXILLARY II) Flat areas of Palate

MANDIBULAR III) Buccal Shelf Area

IV) Posterior Ridge
V) Pear shaped Pad
B) SECONDARY SUPPORT AREAS : -
Area of edentulous ridge that are greater than at right angle
to occlusal forces ; also the area of dentulous ridge that are at
right angle to occlusal forces but tend to resorb under load.

I) ANTERIOR RIDGE
A) MAXILLARY II) RUGAE
III) ALL RIDGE SLOPES

B. MANDIBULAR I) ANTERIOR RIDGE AND ALL SLOPES

Factors affecting SUPPORT
1) Maximum coverage of the basal seat within the limit ofthe heath & functions of the
supporting &limiting tissues.

2) Borders that are in harmony with the anatomic &physiological limitations of the oral
structures

3) A physiologic type of border moulding procedure

4) Proper space ensured in tray for final impression material.

5) Selective pressure technique for final impression.

6) Ideal impression material to be used depending on clinical

situation.

7) A guiding mechanism for correct positioning of the impression tray in the mouth .

8) The tray& final impression should be of dimensionally

stable materials .
